Women’s golf takes second at PL Champ.

Assistant Sports Editor

The women’s and men’s golf teams competed this past weekend at the Patriot League Championship and Navy Invitational, respectively. The women finished in second place, narrowly missing out on a win, while the men slipped in a rough final round and ended their event in 16th place.

The women’s golf team hosted the inaugural Patriot League Women’s Golf Tournament at the Bucknell Golf Club. After two tight days of competition, the final result was not decided until the final few holes when Lehigh edged out the Bison by three strokes for the Patriot League title. Lehigh started the day with a five-stroke lead, which grew to 11 early on in the final round, but a late comeback by the Bison fell just short.

The Bison were led by three of its members. Bridget Wilcox ’14 opened the tournament with a three-over-par 73 and closed the tournament with a four-over 74 to claim the individual runner-up, only five strokes behind the individual champion. Wilcox was closely followed by Lauren Bernard ’14 who shot a 75 in the final round and tied for third individually despite playing through a painful foot injury that has left her sidelined for most of the season. Kasha Scott ’14 also played very well for the team and finished the tournament by going one-under-par in the final 10 holes to shoot a 76 on the day. The three juniors were recognized for their efforts with spots on the All-Patriot League Team.  Additionally, the head coach for the Bison, Kevin Jamieson, was named the conference’s Coach of the Year.

The men’s team, meanwhile, was taking on tough competition at the Navy Invitational in Annapolis, Md. The weekend began on a high note for the Bison, who found themselves in eighth place in the 21-team field after the tournament’s first round on April 20. The team’s score of 304 was slightly behind those of Navy and several ACC schools, and was ahead of all other Patriot League teams competing in the tournament. This result came from solid rounds by Schuyler Stitzer ’14 with a 77, Peter Scialabba ’15 with a 76, Jon Hartman ’13 with a 78 and Dan Bernard ’13 with a 73. Unfortunately, this momentum did not carry over to the final round, which did not see a single member of the team exceeding his score from the previous day. The team’s final round score of 331 dropped it to 16th place.

While the women’s golf team has finished its season, the men’s golf team will look to rebound this weekend at the Patriot League Championship, which will be hosted by Lehigh University.

In a game to determine the host of this year’s Patriot League Championship, a 5-0 run by Lehigh proved too much for the hosting Bison, propelling the Mountain Hawks to an 11-7 win and the Patriot League Regular Season title.

With strong defensive play on both sides, the game remained scoreless over the first six minutes, before Brock Ghelfi ’16 found the back of the net at the 8:50 mark. Just 31 seconds later, the Bison would extend their lead when Peter Burke ’14 scored off a pass from David Dickson ’15. Lehigh finally put itself on the board at the 7:07 mark, but the Orange and Blue would respond with another goal of their own to regain their two-goal lead.

Over the next two quarters, the Mountain Hawks completely shut down the high-powered Bison offense, aided by a 12-save performance by the Lehigh goalie. During the second quarter, the Mountain Hawks were very efficient, scoring three goals on just five shots and taking their first lead of the night.

As the second half opened, Lehigh scored twice more, establishing a three-goal advantage.

The Bison stopped the bleeding at the 7:41 mark, when Dickson found Chase Bailey ’13 to cut into the Lehigh lead. The Orange and Blue then fired off 12 shots, but were unable to convert for a goal. On an ensuing clear, the Mountain Hawks’ goalie fired the ball downfield against the Bison 10-man ride, finding the back of the net and pushing the Lehigh lead to three.

The Orange and Blue were able to respond with a goal by Todd Heritage ’14, but a pushing call against the Bison at the very end of the third quarter allowed Lehigh to take advantage of a man-up situation, adding another goal. Lehigh then added another point, bringing the score to 9-5.

Sean Doyle ’16 then scored his first goal of the day, but the Mountain Hawks would find the back of the net twice over the next eight minutes, for a comfortable five-goal lead. Bailey added his third goal of the game with just under a minute to play, but Lehigh would hold out for the win.

The Bison will be back in action Saturday, visiting Colgate for their final regular season matchup. The game will be shown live on CBS Sports Network at noon.

The baseball team continued its effort to finish the season on a strong note, winning its series with Lehigh over the weekend 3-1, and continuing its winning streak with a victory against Towson on April 16.

The Bison started their final road series of Patriot League play on April 13 with a doubleheader against Lehigh. Bryson Hough ’15 led the team on the mound in the first game of the day, pitching a strong complete game while allowing only one earned run. The Bison grabbed an early 3-0 lead in the first inning thanks to home runs by Travis Clark ’13 and Rob Krentzman ’15, but the offense went silent as Lehigh fought back with four more runs in the final 4-3 loss.

The Bison offense came out strong in the second game of the day and led the team to a 7-6 victory to split the doubleheader. Justin Meier ’14 had three hits in the game, while five of his teammates contributed two hits apiece. Max Kra ’16 also earned his second career save in the tenth inning by retiring three consecutive batters to ensure the Bison victory.

“This weekend was another good weekend for our team,” Clark said. “We lost the first game of the series but were able to bounce back and win the next three. Our team is really coming together in every aspect of the game and it’s all happening at the right time.”

The Orange and Blue continued their momentum into the second part of their series with Lehigh on April 14. Dan Goldstein ’13 led the team with a complete game on the mound in the first game, allowing only five hits and racking up six strikeouts in the 7-2 victory. The Bison offense was led by Joe Ogren ’16, who finished the game with three hits, two RBIs and one run.

Pitching again played a major role in the second half of the doubleheader, this time with Andrew Andreychik ’16 allowing only six hits and one run in eight innings. The Bison were up only 2-1 going into the eighth inning, but an explosive five-run inning including a bases-clearing RBI double by Clark set the Orange and Blue up for an eventual 8-1 victory.

The Bison then took on Towson at home. Clark led the offense once again, totaling four hits and three runs, while Luke Lombardi ’14 and Anthony Gingerelli ’15 had two hits apiece. With the score tied at 4-4, the game went into extra innings, with Kra keeping the game scoreless for 2.2 innings. Kra eventually picked up the win after an RBI single in the 11th inning by Matt Busch ’13 secured a 5-4 victory for the Orange and Blue.

“We have put ourselves in a great position to contend for the first seed in the Patriot League tournament and that’s our goal,” Clark said. “We are looking forward to playing the next two weekends at home and would love support from the campus.”

The Bison will host Army for a series this weekend which will include doubleheaders on April 20 and 21.

Katten sets m. tennis record

Lauren Boone

Senior Writer

The men’s tennis team fell to Army 4-2 on April 12, but managed to come back and sweep Lafayette 7-0 on April 14 and prevail in a 4-3 nail biter against Lehigh on April 15. The three-game home series was highlighted by Josh Katten ’13, who broke the school record for most careers wins with a singles victory over Lafayette.

Against Army, the No. 1 doubles team of Aidan Lynch ’14 and Evan Zimmer ’13 claimed the first victory of doubles play for the Bison, winning its match 8-4. To clinch the doubles point, the No. 3 team of Octavio Canibe ’15 and Kelly Morque ’13 won its match by a close score of 8-6.

Unfortunately, the Bison were not as successful in the singles play, where the Black Knights won all but one match. The lone Bison exception was Zimmer, who won in a close three-set match with a score of 6-3, 1-6, 6-4.

“It was a great first annual alumni weekend for the men’s tennis program,” Katten said. “Friday night against Army was a tough loss, but it was in front of a great crowd. The match could have definitely gone either way, and as a team we are looking forward to hopefully playing Army again at the Patriot League tournament.”

Against Lafayette, Katten broke the record for most career wins with a 6-1, 6-3 singles victory. Katten now holds a 152-93 career record, topping the program record previously held by Ryan Sandburg ’09 with a record of 150-113.

Katten and Nick Bybel ’16 gathered an easy 8-0 victory at the No. 2 doubles position early in the day. The No. 1 doubles team of Lynch and Zimmer pulled out an 8-5 victory, while the No. 3 doubles team of Canibe and Morque clinched an 8-4 victory. The Bison kept the momentum going into singles play, where all players won their matches in straight sets.

“The Lafayette match was a solid team sweep, and it was a very memorable moment when my friends arrived to see me break the all-time combined wins record,” Katten said. “I couldn’t have asked for a better moment, and it was great to do it at Bucknell with friends and family around to see it.”

The Orange and Blue played their last Patriot League regular season match against Lehigh. The Bison and Lehigh were neck-and-neck when Kyle Rosen ’14 clinched a singles victory, winning the match for the Bison.

The Bison dominated in doubles play. First off the court was the No. 2 doubles team of Bybel and Katten, who handily won its match 8-0. The No. 1 doubles team of Lynch and Zimmer as well as the No. 3 doubles team Canibe and Morque both won their doubles matches with a score of 8-4. The victory for Lynch and Zimmer increased their undefeated record to 7-0, which is the longest winning streak of the season for the Orange and Blue.

Despite the ease in doubles play, the singles competition proved to be much more challenging. Bison captains Katten, Morque and Zimmer all fell to their Lehigh opponents. Bybel was able to win his match 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1 singles, while teammate Canibe stayed strong to win his three-set match at No. 6 singles.

With the overall score tied at 3-3, all eyes were on Rosen as he competed in his No. 5 singles match. Rosen lost the first set 3-6, but he was able to fight back and win the last two sets 6-3, 6-4 to clinch the overall victory for the Bison.

With this victory, the Bison end their regular season play with a 13-7 overall record, and a 3-2 record in conference play. They will compete in the Patriot League Tournament as the No. 3 seed, starting Friday in Hamilton, N.Y.

Webster, Joseph set new records

Eric Brod

Senior Writer

Competing on their home track, the Bison men’s and women’s track and field teams had strong performances at the Bison Outdoor Classic last weekend at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium. Both teams had several athletes place in the top 10.

On the men’s side, Luke Webster ’13 led the charge on April 13 in the field events. Webster broke his own program record in the discus with a throw of 172-1. In total, the Orange and Blue had four throwers place in the top 10 in the discus.

“One of the biggest factors in how everyone threw this week was the weather,” Webster said. “The warmer weather finally allowed for some good, consistent outdoor training which is pretty essential to a strictly outdoor event like discus.”

In the hammer throw, Leonard Joseph ’13 also set a program record, finishing first with a throw of 209-11 feet and was the only competitor to break the 200-foot mark in the event. Webster also finished fourth in the shot put with a throw of 52-4 3/4.

On the track, John Dugan ’15 finished fifth in the steeplechase in 9:13.34. Ray Holmes ’14 continued his strong outdoor season, finishing first in the triple jump with a distance of 48-11 3/4. Also on the track, Justin Hicks ’13 won the 100 m race in 10.74 seconds and finished fourth in the 200 m race in 21.42 seconds. Christian Lupica ’15 took second in the 200 m in 21.26 seconds. In the mid-distance events, Alex Jagelsky ’15 finished second in the 800 m race in 1:52.16.

On the women’s side, both the track and field athletes had strong performances. Erin Norris ’15 finished eighth in the javelin with a throw of 131-11 feet. Also shining in the field events was Abby Monaghan ’13, who finished fourth in the discus with a throw of 150-1.

Continuing on the strong performance, Emily Ando ’14 kept the Orange and Blue rolling, finishing in a tie for third in the pole vault, clearing a height of 11-8 1/2. On the track, Sasha Hornock ’13 finished sixth in the 100 m race in 12.49 seconds. In the 400 m race, Jennifer Zymet ’14 finished sixth in 56.56 seconds.

“Because of the stagger, it is initially difficult to determine how in reach you are of your competition,” Zymet said. “So your first 200 needs to be quick, because it’s too difficult to make up ground on your competitors if you start out behind.”

The teams will return to action Saturday when they host the Bucknell Team Challenge at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium, starting at 9:30 a.m.

“As for our upcoming meet, there is going to be some good teams, such as Penn State, so we are looking to compete well,” Zymet said. “Coach [Kevin] Donner always says that when we compete well with good teams, our times and marks will show it.”

Men’s golf fights to secure seventh place

Billy Tyler

Assistant Sports Editor

The men’s golf team took on some tough competition this past weekend at the Manor Intercollegiate, playing at The Manor Resort Golf Club in Farmville, Va. The Bison jumped up two places following a strong final round to finish the tournament in seventh place.

The Bison were led all weekend by Schuyler Stitzer ’14 who shot sub-par scores of 71 and 70, respectively, in the final two rounds of the tournament. Combined with his first-round 78, Stitzer finished the weekend with a 3-over-par 219, placing him fourth individually at the event, only five shots behind the first place finisher.

Additionally, Dan Bernard ’13 shot a 76 in the final round and finished in 22nd individually. Peter Scialabba ’15 finished strong with a closing round 78, Nick Geissler ’16 shot a 77 in the second round and Billy Wright ’14 closed the tournament with his best round of 77.

After an opening round team score of 314, the Bison came back to finish the tournament with rounds of 300 and 301. This was the fourth-best finish of all participating teams and the final round score of 301 was the second-best score of the day.

The Bison will next be in action this weekend at the Navy Invitational, the final event for the team before the Patriot League Championship on April 27-28 at Saucon Valley Country Club in Bethlehem, Pa.

In a crucial Patriot League matchup against Army on April 6, the No. 11 Bison rebounded from a 5-3 halftime deficit to squeeze out a 9-8 victory over the hosting Black Knights.

The Orange and Blue found themselves in a hole early, as Army rattled off two goals in the opening five minutes of play. Three minutes later, Thomas Flibotte ’16 would put the Bison on the board, cutting the deficit to just one.

The Orange and Blue offense gained possession at the beginning of the second quarter, where David Dickson ’15 found Chase Bailey ’13 to tie the game at two apiece. Dickson would then add a goal of his own to give the Bison their first lead of the day. The advantage wouldn’t last long as Army’s faceoff man won the ensuing draw, rushed down the field and scored just seven seconds later. Before the end of the half, the Black Knights added two more tallies to reestablish a two-goal lead.

Down at halftime, the Bison knew they would need to turn it around, but never questioned their ability to do so.

“We weren’t at all in a panic mode. We knew that we were just about to break through on offense and the D was a couple of plays around from shutting them out,” Kyle Feeney ’13 said.

Army came out firing in the third quarter with a total of 11 shots. Solid defense in combination with three big saves from Feeney kept the Black Knights off the board. Meanwhile, the Orange and Blue kept busy with a second goal by Dickson to open the second half, followed by unassisted tallies from Peter Burke ’14 and Bailey.

Army finally broke their scoreless streak at the beginning of the fourth period, tying the game at six. With a slashing call on Army one minute later, the Bison were able to take advantage of a man-up situation when Burke found Bailey to restore the Orange and Blue lead. Sean Doyle ’16 would score on an assist from Todd Heritage ’14 to put the Bison up two.

After the Black Knights cut the lead to a single goal, the Bison again found themselves in a man-up situation. The Orange and Blue would work the ball around before Doyle found Heritage, bringing the score to 9-7.

Army would add a man-up goal of its own at the 4:08 mark, but the Bison held onto their 9-8 lead over the final minutes of play, securing their 10th victory of the year.

The Bison look to avenge last year’s loss in a critical Patriot League matchup versus No. 18/19 Lehigh on Friday at 7:30 p.m. in Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium.

“Last year it was a heartbreaker to lose to a team that took your stuff and beat you with it. I know a lot of guys are excited to get some revenge on them,” Feeney said.

The baseball team continued its Patriot League season last weekend with two doubleheaders at Navy and came out on top, winning the series 3-1.

The Bison started off the weekend slow on offense, falling 2-1 in the first game of their April 6 doubleheader that went 11 innings before a decision. Bryson Hough ’15 had a strong day on the mound pitching nine innings and allowing just one run, but the only offense the Bison could muster was an RBI hit by Carter Bumgardner ’13, one of his two hits on the day.

The offense found its groove in the second game of the doubleheader, which ended in an 8-4 victory for the Bison. Dan Weigel ’14 threw eight innings while allowing three runs and striking out seven, and Bumgardner continued his strong offensive day with two RBI’s, helping the team build a 7-0 lead in the first four innings.

The Orange and Blue continued their momentum into the second day of the series, winning both games of the doubleheader 3-1 and 16-10, respectively. In game three, Dan Goldstein ’13 pitched a complete game with only six hits allowed, while Corey Furman ’14, Travis Clark ’13 and Joe Ogren ’16 each contributed an RBI.

Things got a little more interesting in game four. Andrew Andreychik ’16 pitched a solid seven innings, allowing just one run in the third inning and five hits overall. Bumgardner and Clark both had home runs in the second game as the Bison offense broke out, scoring four runs in four separate innings. A nine-run ninth inning by Navy kept the Bison on their toes, but Max Kra ’16 came in to get the final out and seal the doubleheader sweep.

The Bison will continue to try to improve their 4-4 Patriot League record with a four-game series at Lehigh this weekend.

Men’s tennis gets first PL win

Lauren Boone

The Orange and Blue faced two tough competitors on the road last weekend, claiming a 5-2 victory over Patriot League rival Colgate on April 6 and suffering a 7-0 loss to Binghamton on April 7. The win against Colgate was the Bison’s first win in Patriot League play.

Despite close competition, the Bison swept in doubles play against Colgate. First to finish was the No. 3 doubles team Octavio Canibe ’15 and Kelly Morque ’13, winning 8-3. Next, Aidan Lynch ’14 and Evan Zimmer ’13 claimed victory at the No. 1 doubles position 8-6. Finally, No. 2 doubles team Nick Bybel ’16 and Josh Katten ’13 secured a doubles point for the Bison with a 9-7 victory.

The Orange and Blue kept the momentum going into the singles play, winning the majority of the matches to secure the overall win. Katten secured the first singles win at the No. 4 position 6-3, 6-3. Following Katten, teammates Morque and Zimmer posted singles victories as well. Morque won his match 6-3, 6-2, while Zimmer won 7-5, 6-3. Canibe won his match at the No. 6 position (6-3, 6-1) to secure the overall win for the Bison.

“Our doubles came out solid and stayed tough during key moments,” Zimmer said. “On the singles side, we were broken early in some matches, but were able to stay composed and battle through our opponents. Overall, it turned out to be a great win for the Bison.”

With this victory, the Bison improved their overall season record to 11-5 and their conference record to 1-1. This was also their sixth consecutive victory over Colgate.

Unfortunately, the Bison did not have the same success against Binghamton, ending their four-match winning streak. In doubles play, Bybel and Katten clinched the only victory for the Bison that day (8-6) at the No. 1 doubles position. With this victory, Katten is one match away from tying the Bison record for most combined singles and doubles career wins at 150 matches.

The No. 2 doubles team of Lynch and Ryan Marcil ’14, lost its match 8-6. Morque and Canibe also lost their match 8-1 at the No. 3 doubles position. Some of the singles matches were also close, with Morque, Katten and Lynch all pushing their singles matches to third sets.

“Unfortunately, on Sunday we went up against a tough competitor in Binghamton, but there was plenty positive to take from the loss,” Katten said. “Binghamton has won their conference five years in a row, and while we lost, we were right there in most of the matches. Going forward, it’s important to play some tough matches as they definitely help prepare the team for the Patriot League Tournament.”

With this loss, the Bison’s season record fell to 11-6. The Bison will compete at home for their next four matches, starting Friday when they play rival Army at 3 p.m. on the Varsity Tennis Courts, followed by matches against Lafayette on April 14 at 2 p.m. and Lehigh on April 15 at 3 p.m.

Track teams finish 2nd, 8th

Eric Brod

Senior Writer

The Bison men’s and women’s track and field teams continued their strong spring seasons with an impressive showing at the Colonial Relays last weekend in Williamsburg, Va. The men’s team finished second while the women’s team came away with an eighth place finish.

The Bison men finished the Colonial Relays with a team total of 113 points, while first-place Rutgers won with 128. The top performers for the Orange and Blue were the members of the 4×100 meter relay, who finished in first place in 41.53 seconds. Also shining for the Bison was Christian Lupica ’15, who finished first among collegiate competitors in the 100-meter hurdles in 14.25 seconds, which set a career best and broke the program record previously set in 2012.

“Breaking a school record is always fun,” Lupica said. “They aren’t usually the main goal, but through trying to run fast and [achieve] competitive times, they become secondary goals that help to motivate me and are exciting to surpass.”

In the field, Luke Webster ’13 finished second in the discus with a throw of 160-2 feet, while teammate Leonard Joseph ’13 finished in sixth with a throw of 148-3 feet. In the triple jump, Ray Holmes ’14 finished second with a jump of 49-4 1/4.

For the women, many individuals and relays shined en route to an eighth place finish for the Orange and Blue. The team finished with 53 points, while winner Rutgers finished with 104. The 4×200 meter relay team of Jennifer Zymet ’14, Sasha Hornock ’13, Jess Bridle ’16 and Kim Nagotko ’15 finished in 1:41.35 minutes, which set a new program record en route to a third place finish.

“The race strategy for a 4×200 is just to have all four people run their fastest in the same race, which is hard to do,” Hornock said. “Additionally, having three smooth handoffs can make a substantial difference in the relay time.”

The distance medley relay also put up a strong performance, finishing third in 11:57.32 minutes. In the field, Abby Monaghan ’13 finished fourth in the discus with a throw of 138-3 feet, and Alexandra Romanelli ’13 finished seventh in the triple jump with a jump of 36-4 1/4.

The Bison will host their first home meet of the season this weekend at the Bison Outdoor Classic, which is scheduled to take place from April 13-14 at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium.
