Behind the strong offensive performance by Bison second baseman Laura Sandford ’13, the softball team was to earn its first Patriot League series win this weekend over Holy Cross. During the four-game series, Sandford was able to hit an impressive .533, recording eight hits along with two RBIs. After dropping the first game of the series to the Crusaders, the Orange and Blue were able to snap their 13-game losing streak behind a walk-off RBI by Sandford in the ninth. Sanford went two-for-five in the game and drove in two of the team’s four runs. For the first time in her career, Sandford was able to record three multi-hit games in a row, and her current four-game hitting streak ties a career best mark she set a year ago.

In the midst of a tough season thus far, Sandford’s hot streak could not have come at a better time for the Orange and Blue. Currently sitting at 3-13 in the Patriot League with one series remaining, the Bison will look to rally through the end of the year and try and make a postseason push, but their success will be largely dependent on their ability to put runs on the board. During their 16 league games this season, the Orange and Blue have managed to score three runs or more in just five games.

This weekend, Sandford and the Bison will travel to Lafayette for their final regular season series.

Athlete of the Week: David Duffett

Infielder

Hometown: Pittsburgh, Pa.

Major: Mechanical Engineering

Season Statistics:

Avg: .329

GP-GS: 38-38

H: 50

RBIs: 29

SLG percentage: .454

OB percentage: .378

During a weekend of major playoff implications, David Duffett ’12 propelled the men’s baseball team to a 3-1 series win over Lehigh behind his consistent offensive production over the two days. The senior infielder batted .500 over the four games, notching three RBIs and three runs scored against the Mountain Hawks pitching staff. Starting strong in game one, Duffett was the only Orange and Blue player to record multiple hits and was able to get on base at least twice in each of the four contests. During the series finale, Duffett produced his strongest offensive performance of the weekend, going 3-5 to help the Bison to a one-run victory.

“My coaches and teammates put me in great opportunities to contribute to the team and I was fortunate enough to come through for them,” Duffett said. “We knew we were capable of playing well and we were able to put it all together this weekend against Lehigh. The pitching staff did a great job against their offense and we were able to hit well enough to win the series.”

Duffett emerged as one of the team’s most talented players last season when he took over the starting job as a junior. Last season, Duffett ranked second on the team with a .361 batting average during the regular season and recorded 18 multi-hit games. For the Bison, Duffett’s greatest quality is his durability. As a sophomore, Duffett played in 58 of 60 games and currently leads the team in games played with 38 this season.

This season, Duffett has turned his attention to being a good leader for the younger players on the team.

“My role on the team has changed a lot over the past four years,” he said. As a younger guy I always looked to the seniors to lead the team in the late innings, but now I’m one of the guys trying to help the team down the stretch. I would not have made it to this point in my career without all the support from my coaches and teammates over the years.”

Looking ahead, Duffett and the Bison have two key Patriot League series remaining on the schedule. This weekend, the team will travel to West Point to take on Army and then will close out their season at Lafayette one week later.

Bison Athlete of the Week: Ali Carey ’14

Ali Carey ’14

Lacrosse

Bio:

Position: Attack

Class: First-year

Major: Undeclared

Hometown: Clarksville, Md.

Stats:

Goals: 5

Shots on Goal: 7/7

Ground Balls: 2

Turnovers: 2

In her first ever college lacrosse game, attack Ali Carey ’14 gave Bison fans a lot to be excited about, posting impressive stats against St. Bonaventure. She scored five goals, producing half of her team’s scoring and showing great efficiency in shooting. All seven of her shots were on goal.

More impressive is that Carey was playing in her very first college game.

“Playing my first college lacrosse game was one of the most exciting experiences I have had,” she said.

Of course, some nerves came with the game, but Carey did a great job handling them.

“I just focused on catching the first ball, and everything else just happened,” she said. “Our upperclassmen were so great at keeping us composed and reassuring us that even though we are a young team we are a good one.”

Even as a young star, she remains modest.

“Overall, I think the reason I played well was the confidence my team gave me to go to goal and that I got lucky and had a good shooting day,” she said.

If Carey continues to play at this level throughout the rest of her career as a Bison, she will significantly enhance the team’s chance of becoming a force in the Patriot League.
