Men’s track records 12 individual wins

By Colin Fields

Staff Writer

The men’s track team, the defending Indoor and Outdoor Patriot League champion, racked up 12 individual victories at the Bucknell Team Challenge at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium last weekend. The Bison compiled 292.5 points, just under the rest of the field combined, in one of their best performances of the year.

The Orange and Blue throwers have been stellar all year long and Saturday was no different. Luke Webster ’13 came just six inches short of the school discus record that has stood for nearly 35 years with a toss of 168’ 6’’. Webster’s toss put him in both second in the meet and second in the school record books. Tom Barr ’12 also performed well in the discus; the shot put record holder put up a toss of 162’ 3’’, breaking the 160-foot mark for the first time in his career in the discus. Barr also posted a career best in the hammer throw, with a toss of 182’ 11’’. He was bested by teammate Leonard Joseph ’13 whose toss of 204’ 5’’ moved him to third place in Bison history.

“I would say that the start our team has had is encouraging because most of our athletes, if not all, are not peaking yet, but they are performing extremely well. Having two consecutive home meets allows us to capitalize on a familiar environment as well as a larger audience than we typically have,” Joseph said.

Jason Brown ’13, Nathaniel Witter ’14 and Alex Prieto ’14 picked up wins in the high jump, pole vault and the long jump. Andrew Powell ’12 and Kevin Keller ’15 also picked up second-place finishes for the Bison.

Christian Lupica ’15 took first in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 14.7 seconds and teammates Robert Arent ’12, Dan Mularz ’12 and Powell helped fill four of the top five spots in the event.

“Being able to have our two meets at home is definitely a nice perk. We train on the track every day so we are familiar with running on it, and not having to worry about travel time and living out of a hotel makes it a lot easier to have a flexible routine and eat/sleep/warm-up in a way that is best for you,” Lupica said.

Several Bison will compete this weekend in the Penn Relays in Philadelphia, while the test of the team will travel today to Bloomsburg for the Maroon & Gold Invitational. These are the last events for the Bison until the Patriot League Outdoor Championships on May 4-5 in Worcester, Mass.

Men’s track dominates in home meet

By Colin Fields

The men’s track team had an impressive performance as the host university of the Bison Outdoor Classic. The event is unscored for team competition but the Bison toppled more than 20 top-10 marks and are pressing for a third straight outdoor title.

On Sunday, Ray Holmes ’14 increased his career best by nearly two feet in the triple jump with a distance of 48’ 8’’, ranking him third all-time at the University.

“We have a great team this year and our start this season shows the depth of our team on both the men’s and women’s side of the program. We have already had a lot of great performances and everybody is getting better as the weeks tick away towards the Championships,” Holmes said.

The Bison throwers have torn through the Bison record books this season, and last weekend was no different. Leonard Joseph ’13 placed second in the hammer toss by becoming the fourth Bison to ever clear the 200 foot mark and moving him into fourth in Bison history.

There were plenty of personal records broken over the weekend, including Daniel Markwalter ’13 placing third in the pole vault clearing 15’ 9’’, moving him into fourth in program history.

On the track Robert Arent ’12 and Christian Lupica ’15 performed well in the 400 meter hurdles. Arent finished third with a time of 53.02 and Lupica 10th with a time of 55.08 seconds, moving him into the top 10 in Bison history.

“As a team, we’ve been training hard and not really worrying about peaking yet, so the fact that we are still competing so well as a whole just means that by the championship portion of our season, when everyone is at their peak form, we are going to be a really tough team to beat,” Lupica said.

The Bison are hosts again this weekend at the Bison Team Challenge, the season finale for the Bison at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium.

“Competing at home allows us to be more relaxed and comfortable which is conducive to getting good marks on the track and in the field. We’re looking to win our third outdoor championship in a row. Getting this outdoor season off to a good start puts us in good position to defend our championship title,” Arent said.

The Patriot League Championships will be held May 4 and 5 in Worcester, Mass.

Barr ’12 anchors men with record performance

By Colin Fields

Writer

Tom Barr ’12 continued his dynamite senior season Saturday with yet another track and field program record in the shot put. Although the event was unscored for team play, 10 other Bison were victorious in Towson, Md. this weekend as the Bison opened up their title defense in this yearʼs outdoor season.

Barr, who had already broken the Bison indoor shot put record earlier this year, continued his success by crushing his old outdoor record. Barr broke his previous outdoor best by two feet, launching a toss of 54’ 2.5’. Barr broke the outdoor record previously held by Timothy “Big Tim” Medlock who threw for 53’ 5’ in 2009. Barr finished second overall in the event but was not done after the shot put. In his next event, the hammer throw, Barr picked up a victory with a career best mark of 174’-8’’. Barrʼs performance in the hammer throw placed him in the top 10 in program history for yet another event. Barr then finished fifth in the discus, giving him three top-five spots at the Towson Invitational.

“I am happy to beat Timʼs record,” Barr said. “Records are meant to be broken, and as a former Bison Tim left his record as a challenge for someone to beat, and I am glad that I rose to the occasion. I feel confident moving forward into 2012 after my victories this weekend because every time we compete, it is a test of our technique and conditioning.”

Laddie Trees ’15 showed promise in the javelin, joining Barr with a solid performance in throws. Trees won the javelin in his first-ever outdoor meet, tossing a mark 208’ 7’ and placing seventh on the all-time list. Teammate Stephen Koullias ’13 also performed well, placing fourth in the shot put with a throw of 51’ 11.25’. His mark was only 2.75 feet shy of Barrʼs record and placed him in sixth overall in Bison history. Luke Webster ’13 kept the train rolling with a win of his own in the discus with a toss of 157’ 9’.

On the track, Ray Holmes ’14 picked up two victories in both the triple jump and the long jump. Robert Arent ’12 and Dave Brown ’12 were also successful in their hurdles events. Arent picked up the victory in the 400 meter hurdles and second in the 110 meter hurdles while Brown grabbed another Orange and Blue victory in the 1500 meter hurdles. Justin Hicks ’13, who was the Outstanding Athlete of the Meet in the Patriot League Indoor Championships, won the 100 meters, and Dustin Horning ’13 won the 800 meters.

The Bison will look to continue their success in the upcoming Colonial Relays April 6-7 at William and Mary in Williamsburg, Va.

Men’s track continues hot start to season

By Colin Fields

Writer

After a strong showing last weekend at the Towson Invitational, the men’s track team did not miss a beat at the Colonial Relays in Williamsburg, Va. The Orange and Blue beat 36 other teams to take first place overall at Zable Stadium, the first ever victory at the Colonial Relays for the Bison. Robert Arent ’12 took an individual victory, and Tom Barr ’12 led a stellar group of throwers with a victory of his own.

The Bison won handily with more than a 50-point margin over second-place Temple. Villanova, Virginia Tech and Rutgers rounded out the top five but finished 70 points behind the Orange and Blue. Bison athletes put up points in 15 of the 26 events, showing off the team’s consistency and depth.

Arent earned a victory for the Bison after having the fastest time in both the preliminaries and finals of the 110-meter hurdles. Arent’s time of 14.58 seconds in the finals came just shy of a personal record, but it was good enough for gold on Saturday. Arent helped the Bison to more than 20 of the team’s 130 points over the course of the weekend.

Andrew Powell ’12, who was the heptathalon champion at the Patriot League Indoor Championships, contributed with a second-place finish in the high jump by clearing six feet and six inches.

Joseph improved his hammer throw from a week earlier with a personal best throw of 188-5, giving him second place. His toss was six feet over his previous personal record.

Teammates Barr, Webster and Heitzman all added points in throwing events for the Orange and Blue. Barr finished fourth in the hammer throw and fifth in the discus, Webster finished fourth in the discus, and Heitzman finished second in the javelin for the second consecutive year.

Last week at the Towson Invitational, the Bison throwers won three different events. Ted Heitzman ’12, Leonard Joseph ’13 and Luke Webster ’13 won the javelin, hammer throw and discus, respectively. Barr finished second in three events.

“I came to school significantly improved from when I left last spring, both strength- and technique-wise. Since then it’s just been adjustments from my coach helping me slowly increase distance,” Joseph said.

“I was able to start the season on a positive note simply through focusing this off-season on what my throws were missing. I trained hard with these areas in mind, and I was able to get the season started on the right foot,” Heitzman said.

The Bison look to continue their success at the Bison Outdoor Classic on April 15 and 16.

Men’s track dominates in Baltimore

The men’s track team, the defending outdoor Patriot League champions, lived up to expectations on Saturday at the Towson Invitational in Maryland. Lenny Joseph ’13, Ted Heitzman ’12, Luke Webster ’13, Chris Sacks ’14, Isaih Bell ’11, John Picardo ’11, Ian Shore ’11 and Drew Fitzgerald ’11 all brought home victories for the Bison. Bison athletes also took the top two spots in the hammer throw, discus, 1500-meter and 100-meter.

Joseph ran away with the hammer throw, throwing 182′ 1″ and breaking his personal record by over 13 feet. His teammate, Tom Barr ’12, threw 169’9″ for second place and his own personal record.

The Bison continued their successful throwing in the discus where Webster finished first, Barr second and Joseph third. Heitzman won the javelin while Barr finished second in the shot put, his third second-place finish.

In the 1500-meter run, the Bison took the top six spots. Sacks, Rookie of the Meet at the Patriot League Indoor Championships, grabbed first with a time of 4:04.20. Teammate Christopher Boyd ’11 finished a close second with a time of 4:04.76.

“I am excited to be racing outside, and I think it will be a great spring season,” Sacks said. “In terms of last weekend, my time was slow, but the meet served as a good warm-up to prepare everybody for the rest of the outdoor season.”

Bell and Justin Hicks ’13 took the top two spots for the Bison in the 100-meter run. Bell ran it in 10.98 seconds while Hicks finished just two hundredths behind with a mark of 11 seconds.

Picardo took gold in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:55.22, and Shore took home gold in the 5K.

Fitzgerald placed first in the high jump at 6’4″. He nearly won a second event by finishing second in the long jump.

“As a team we have very high expectations for the spring season, and we understand that we need strong performances right from the start,” Fitzgerald said. “The outdoor season is short, making every practice and competition very important. Personally, as a senior, each meet takes on a little more meaning, and I hope to make the best of it and win another team championship.”

The Orange and Blue will look to continue their success at the William and Mary Colonial Relays on April 1-2.

Sacks ’14 sets Bison first-year record

By Colin Fields

Contributing Writer

The men’s track team finished third in the team standings at the Patriot League Championships this past weekend in Annapolis, Md. Chris Sacks ’14 became the first first-year student in Bison history to win two events in his first championships, also claiming Rookie of the Meet honors. Andrew Powell ’12 also took first place in the heptathlon on Saturday, his second heptathlon victory of the year. Robert Arent ’12 also broke the school record in the 60-meter hurdles.

The Bison went into the final day in second, trailing Navy by seven and leading Army by 14. The Orange and Blue were the best of the non-academy schools, finishing with 151 points. The Bison finished well ahead of fourth-place finisher Lehigh, who totaled up a mere 46.5 points.

Sacks was victorious in the 4×800 relay with teammates Christopher Boyd ’11, Jordan Donaldson ’12 and Clayton Smith ’11. The team’s time of 7:34.15 was good enough for a close victory over Colgate. The time also set a record for the Wesley A. Brown Fieldhouse.

Sacks’ second victory was not as close. The first-year student blew away the competition in the 1,000 meter run by a full two seconds. Sacks’ performance this past weekend helped him pick up First Team All-Patriot League honors.

“Going into the championships, I was nervous because Patriot Leagues is the most important part of the season. However, at the same time I was confident due to a great deal of preparation that went into getting ready for the meet,” Sacks said.

Powell also had a big weekend for the Bison. Powell won the high jump, long jump and 60-meter hurdles on his way to heptathalon gold. His total of 4,967 points was enough for second place in the Bison record books. Powell picked up his third win in the heptathlon and his second win this season for the Bison.

“I am really looking forward to the championship meet as it really brings the team together. Instead of everyone chasing individual marks like during the season, the one goal everyone can unite under this weekend is to beat the other teams. I’m also hoping to break the school record in the hurdles,” Arent said.

Arent did not disappoint in the 60-meter hurdles. He joined teammate Marlon Woods ’11 in the finals of the event and ran 8.13 seconds in the prelims, which was just one-hundreth of a second shy of the school record. The next day Arent had a breakout performance and smashed his previous record by five hundredths with a time of 8.07, a new school record. Arent joined Sacks and five other teammates on the First Team All-Patriot League squad.

The Bison will be competing in the IC4A Championships in Boston, Mass. on March 5 and 6.

Men’s track dazzles in Winter Classic

By Cooper Sutton

Sports Editor

The men’s track and field team finished its regular season on high note this Saturday at the Bucknell Winter Classic with 10 different Bison claiming victories.

Most notable among the victorious Bison was Robert Arent ’12, who won the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.19 seconds and came in second in the 200-meter dash, which was won by Isaih Bell ’11. The hurdles time was the second-fastest in Bison history, 0.03 seconds behind Arent’s own career best. Arent’s name now appears on 10 different University top-10 lists.

In the 800-meter run, Chris Sacks ’14 took first place with a 1:52.89. His time was the fastest for a Bison athlete in seven years.

Two separate throwers put themselves on the top-five list for shot-put this weekend. Zachary Shapiro ’11 took first in the event and fourth all-time, posting a throw of 51-5.75. Coming in second place was Tom Barr ’12, who threw a 51-4.25 for fifth all-time.

The Bison had a strong showing in the triple jump as well, taking the top four spots. Ray Holmes ’14 won the event with a distance of 46-6.75. The other top-four finishers were Kevin McGuire ’11, Dan Kubinski ’11 and Alex Prieto ’14, in that order from second to fourth.

Three separate pole vaulters, Ian Ferguson ‘13, Drew Fitzgerald ’11 and Daniel Markwalter ‘13, tied for first place, clearing the 14-9 jump.

Capping off the successful day for field events, Leonard Joseph ’13 took first place in the weight throw, throwing a career-best 57-5.75.

The Winter Classic seems to have been a boost for the team going into the Patriot League Championships.

“I think the Winter Classic demonstrated our team’s capability going into the championships,” Nigel Robinson ’14 said. “We’ve been hit with a lot of injuries this year, but we’re still a very competitive team. I think it’s evident how hard we’ve been working that we’re hitting plateaus so late into the season.”

The team hopes to reach new heights this upcoming weekend in the Patriot League Championships hosted by Navy.
