Behind the strong offensive performance by Bison second baseman Laura Sandford ’13, the softball team was to earn its first Patriot League series win this weekend over Holy Cross. During the four-game series, Sandford was able to hit an impressive .533, recording eight hits along with two RBIs. After dropping the first game of the series to the Crusaders, the Orange and Blue were able to snap their 13-game losing streak behind a walk-off RBI by Sandford in the ninth. Sanford went two-for-five in the game and drove in two of the team’s four runs. For the first time in her career, Sandford was able to record three multi-hit games in a row, and her current four-game hitting streak ties a career best mark she set a year ago.

In the midst of a tough season thus far, Sandford’s hot streak could not have come at a better time for the Orange and Blue. Currently sitting at 3-13 in the Patriot League with one series remaining, the Bison will look to rally through the end of the year and try and make a postseason push, but their success will be largely dependent on their ability to put runs on the board. During their 16 league games this season, the Orange and Blue have managed to score three runs or more in just five games.

This weekend, Sandford and the Bison will travel to Lafayette for their final regular season series.

Softball takes first PL series

Laura Sandford ’13 hit a walk-off single to give the softball team its first Patriot League win of the season against Holy Cross last Friday. The win broke a 13-game losing streak for the Orange and Blue. The Bison took three of four games against the Crusaders over the weekend series to keep their playoff hopes alive.

After the Bison lost the series opener 6-1, the second game initially seemed to be heading the same way. Holy Cross jumped ahead from the beginning, scoring two runs in the top of the first, and took a 3-1 lead into the seventh inning.

Alex Wells ’15 got things going for the Bison with a lead-off single up the middle. She was replaced on the bases by pinch runner Kasey Segiel ’14 who eventually scored on a Mary Horton ’13 triple. Meredith Dickson ’12 then hit Horton in with a single up the middle to tie the game and send it into extra innings.

In the ninth inning, Cydnee Sanders ’15 doubled to right-center field and the Crusaders intentionally walked Horton, who was two-for-three with two runs and an RBI on the day. Dickson loaded the bases with a bouncing single, which brought up Sandford, whose single gave the Bison a 4-3 win. Sandford completed the game two-for-five with two RBIs.

The victory, in addition to ending the consecutive games lost streak, ended a 14-game conference losing streak that began last season.

“Our defense was solid, pitching was great and our hitting was on point,” Courtney Conover ’14 said. “These games definitely boosted the team morale going into next weekend.”

The Bison win was aided by Bridget Gates who began pitching in the third inning and completed 6.1 innings allowing only one hit and no runs. She also struck out three batters and did not allow a walk.

On Saturday, the Bison defeated the Crusaders 4-2 and 3-2 and brought their record to 9-32 overall and 3-13 in the Patriot League. In the first game, the Bison pulled ahead in the first inning, but the Crusaders came storming back in the top of the second with a two-run home run from Nicole Ortiz. Later in the second inning, Nikki Silva ’15 scored an unearned run for the Bison. Tori Robinson ’15 then hit a triple in the fourth inning and later scored.

In the final game of the series, Mallory Lyons ’14 hit a line drive down the left-field line with Horton on third in the eighth inning, giving the Bison another walk-off win.

Colie Escobar ’15 had a phenomenal series for the Bison, going four-for-six (.667) and scoring two runs in three games. Sandford also hit eight-for-15 (.533) with one run and two RBIs. Dickson, who was recognized for Senior Day, hit .400 in her final weekend at home.

“Our team had a wonderful weekend. It was my final time playing on our field. We had two exciting extra-inning wins in which multiple players contributed. Our defense was phenomenal, making some of the ‘special’ plays. Our YOLO attitude finally showed through,” Dickson said.

The victories gave the Bison three consecutive wins for the first time this season. The team hopes to bring its momentum to Easton, Pa. as it takes on the Lafayette Leopards on in a four-game series this weekend.

Softball continues to struggle

By Thomas Walter
Writer

The softball team suffered six losses this week at the hands of Army and Saint Francis (Pa.). Playing at home over the weekend, the Orange and Blue lost all four of their games to the Black Knights with the closest contest being a 6-3 loss on April 14. Following the Patriot League series, the Bison were swept once again by Saint Francis, managing to score just one run in the two games.

The Orange and Blue have been swept in six of their last seven series and have lost 23 out of their last 24 games. Deep into the season, the Bison have nearly played themselves out of title contention and need to find a way to get their bats to come alive if they hope to have any chance to make the league tournament.

Against Army, again the Bison had their chances to score but could not convert.  On the second day of the two-day series, the Orange and the Blue left a total of 12 runners on base.

On April 17, Saint Francis outscored the Orange and the Blue 15–1 over two games. This continues the streak of the Bison getting violently outscored by all the opponents they have faced in the last two months.

Currently, the squad sits at 6-31 with a 0-12 record in the Patriot League.

“We are going to continue giving our all every pitch,” catcher/outfielder Meredith Dickson ’12 said. “We are looking forward  to coming together as a team. Our love for the game will show through.”

The Bison will host Holy Cross this coming weekend before traveling to Lafayette for their final series of the regular season.

Softball shut out by rival Lehigh

By Thomas Walter
Writer

The softball team dropped four straight to Patriot League rival Lehigh last weekend in Bethlehem, Pa. Despite heading into the weekend with newfound confidence following a win agains La Salle last week, the Orange and Blue could not manufacture any offensive production, falling in all four games by scores of 9-0, 8-0, 8-0, and 9-0.

After being outscored 34-0 the Bison are well aware that their bats need to come alive if they hope to take down Army this coming weekend.

“We need all of the parts of our game to come together,” Meredith Dickson ’12 said. “We need to wake up our bats and have consistent pitching outings. We need to rely on the confidence we have in ourselves.”

Certainly, the team’s future success will lie on whether or not it can begin to put runners on base and produce the timely hits necessary to put key runs on the board. During this past weekend’s series, the Bison failed to record more than four hits in any single game, putting all the pressure on the pitching staff to be perfect, but the Bison pitchers were not up to the task.

“We really struggled with our hitting and pitching this weekend, so going into this weekend we really need to focus maximizing hits on offense and minimizing them when pitching,” Courtney Conover ’14 said.

In order to put an end to this losing streak, the Orange and Blue will need to pull it all together against a very strong Army team that is 22-15 overall and 5-3 in conference. Despite their winless Patriot League record, the Bison remain confident and know that they are a strong team.

“In order to stay confident during this losing streak we have to remind ourselves that we can compete with any team in the patriot league,” Conover said.

Softball drops four of five

By Thomas Walter

Writer

The softball team opened Patriot League play this past weekend by losing four straight at home to Colgate, but rebounded with a split in a doubleheader against La Salle on Wednesday.

The Orange and Blue hit the ball well but left runners stranded in scoring position all weekend long. In the four games against the Raiders, the Bison recorded just four total runs off 15 hits.

“The most important thing for us to turn around is to get our bats moving so we can produce more offensively,” Cassie Greenhawk ’13 said.

On Saturday, the Orange and Blue kept it close in both of the day’s games, falling 4-3 and 2-0. Mary Horton ’13 went one-for-one with an RBI and three walks in game one, while Tori Robinson ’15 recorded the team’s only hit in game two.

Sunday’s games were much more lopsided as the Raiders were able to outscore the Bison 11-1 and 5-0.

“Even though the results weren’t that great, the team definitely took some positives out of this past weekend, the first being that even though there were a lot of runs scored against the team there was solid pitching effort all weekend long,” Courtney Conover ’14 said.

Going forward, the team knows that it must continue this trend of solid pitching if it wishes to succeed late in the season.

“I’d have to say that our pitching staff did a phenomenal job pitching during the Saturday double-header,” Greenhawk said. “They really held their own against Colgate as far as minimizing their opportunities to get runners in scoring position.”

After a disappointing weekend against Colgate, the team took to the field Wednesday against La Salle to get another warm up in before facing off against Lehigh. After dropping the first game 1-0, the Bison responded strongly with a 5-2 victory. Laura Sandford ’13 drove in the winning run in the second game in order for the team to get another win under its belt and get some confidence going into this weekend.

“The La Salle games definitely give us extra confidence going into Lehigh,” Conover said. “I think we let the first game get away from us, but we answered back in the second game and came back to win the game.”

The team travels to Lehigh this weekend to play its second Patriot League series of the season. The series is set to start on 1 p.m. this Saturday.

“The biggest thing we need to get done against Lehigh is hit when we have runners on, especially when they are in scoring position,” Conover said. “We have definitely been leaving too many runners on base and that’s definitely something we want to improve on this weekend.”

Softball extends winless streak to six

By Thomas Walter

Writer

The women’s softball team extended its losing streak to six game this week, dropping four games to Cornell, Delaware State, and Drexel and lowering its record to 5-14 on the season. After losing a pair of contests at the Delaware State Tournament this weekend, the Orange and Blue lost both games of its doubleheader against Drexel 7-2 on Wednesday.

In Delaware, the Bison’s two opponents combined for 17 runs over the four games, including nine extra-base hits and three home runs. Against Cornell, the Bison held the lead for most of the game, but two late home runs gave the Big Red a slim 9-8 victory. Leading by four in the bottom of the seventh, the Orange and Blue quickly surrendered a two-run home run to Erin Belles, cutting the lead in half. Then, minutes later, Erica Gaeta smashed a three-run homer with two outs, clinching the win for Cornell.

“We have played Cornell a lot in the past and they have always been a very competitive and well coached team and the fact that we did very well against then definitely helped our confidence going into this weekend,” Courtney Conover ’14 said.

Despite the loss, the Orange and Blue did see Bridget Gates ’13 go two-for-three with three RBIs, while Kristen Zahn ’15 and Meredith Dickson ’12 also recorded multi-hit games.

Later in the day, the Bison suffered their second loss to Delaware State 8-3. Unlike the Cornell game, the Orange and Blue trailed the entire game and could never seem to string together enough hits to put runs on the board. Overall, the Bison stranded 10 runners on base.

Against Drexel, the Bison continued to struggle offensively, producing just four runs off of six hits. Highlighting the day for the Bison was Nikki Silva ’15 who recorded her first career home run, breaking up a no-hit bid in the fifth inning. Mallory Lyons ’14 and Colie Escobar ’15 were the only other Bison players to record RBIs on the day.

“The most important thing in offense that we took away from this last weekend was to be patient and hit our pitches. The most important thing in defense is communication and to make every play count,” Mary Horton ’13 said.

Despite the slow start to their season, the Orange and Blue have a chance to turn things around as they head into Patriot League play this weekend. The Bison will host Colgate for a four-game series starting on Saturday at 1 p.m.

“The most important thing the team took away from this weekend to next weekend is to not let our guard down, especially in the late innings, and to take command of the games we know we can win and just have a lot of presence, control, and swag on the field,” Gates said.

Softball splits series with Holy Cross

By Lindsay Regruto

Staff Writer

Alex MacLean ’13 earned Patriot League Softball Pitcher of the Week while Alison Ford ’11 smashed a grand slam with a career-best seven RBIs in two games to leading the softball team to a 2-2 split at Holy Cross last weekend.

MacLean posted a 2-1 record for the week with a 2.67 ERA. The sophomore now totals 92 strikeouts, with an overall career total of 184. While MacLean led her team defensively, Ford’s grand slam put it ahead for the win in their first game on Saturday.

The Bison were unstoppable offensively on Saturday, defeating the Crusaders 14-6 in the first game of the series. The Orange and Blue wasted no time and had two runs on the board by the top of the first. Holy Cross answered with four runs of their own to take an early 4-2 lead. The Bison rallied quickly in the seventh inning to retake the lead. Jessie Snyder ’11 had a two-out, two-RBI double to tie the game. RBIs by Lauren Fry ’11 and Ford increased the gap, and the second inning ended with the Bison ahead 7-4. Bridget Gates ’13 retired the side to hold the Holy Cross offense at bay.

Ford crushed a pitch for a grand slam to center field, bringing the Bison to a decisive 11-4 lead in the third. The Orange and Blue closed the game with two more runs, allowing Holy Cross only two more as well. Snyder and Fry also had a big game at the plate with Snyder going 3-4 and Fry 2-3 with four runs scored and three RBIs.

The Orange and Blue continued their winning streak with a second win 4-3 over the Crusaders on Saturday. Holy Cross took an early lead in the first, putting one run on the board. The Bison came back with four runs in the second to take the lead 4-1. The Bison offense tried to rally later in the game but was unable to put any more runs on the board. The defense only allowed the Crusaders one more for the rest of the game, giving the Bison their first back-to-back Patriot League wins of the season.

The Orange and Blue were unable to sustain their stellar offense, falling 4-2 to Holy Cross in the first game on Sunday. Holy Cross was the first to clear the goose eggs off the board posting four runs in the first three innings. An RBI by Fry in the third brought Sam Rollandi ’11 around the bases to shrink the gap. The Bison kept swinging but could not turn any hits into runs until the sixth. The Orange and Blue scored one more run in the bottom of the sixth to make it a two-run game. It was not enough, and the Crusaders took the win.

The Bison also dropped the last game of the series to Holy Cross 2-0 on Sunday. Neither team started off strong–the game remained scoreless until the fourth inning. The Crusaders posted two runs in the top of the inning. They would be the only runs for either team, giving the Crusaders a small victory over the Bison to end the day.

The Bison will be back on the field to host Lafayette tomorrow and Sunday.

Softball suffers 0-4 weekend

By Lindsay Regruto

Staff Writer

The softball team suffered a tough weekend, going 0-4 in its second Patriot League series on the road at Colgate.

The Bison took a close loss in the last game of the series on Sunday falling 5-4 to the Raiders. The Orange and Blue came out ready to play sending all three Raiders back to the dugout in order in the first. Colgate answered by taking a 2-0 lead by the fourth. The Bison rallied in the fourth with Jessie Snyder ’11 putting the first run on the board for the team. Alison Ford ’11 and Elyse Colmenero ’11 each doubled to bring in a run, putting the Bison in the lead 3-2. By the seventh inning, the Raiders had taken a two-run lead over the Orange and Blue. The Bison rallied in the seventh but put only one more run on the board before the last out.

The Orange and Blue suffered another tough loss earlier on Sunday falling 9-0 to the Raiders in their first game of the day. Colgate’s offense came out strong, taking a 6-0 lead over the Bison by the third inning. The team managed to put runners in scoring position in the first three innings but could not bring anyone around. The Bison defense held off the Raiders until the sixth inning, but the offense could not find momentum of their own. Colgate plated three more runs in the sixth that went unanswered by the Orange and Blue for the sweep.

On Saturday the Bison dropped their second game 5-2 to the Raiders. Both teams were slow to start with the game remaining scoreless until the fourth inning. Colgate was the first to put runs on the board,  gaining a 3-0 lead over the Bison. Snyder led off the fifth inning with a single and eventually made it around, giving the Orange and Blue their first run of the game. In the sixth inning, Mallory Lyons ’14 led off with a single and was brought home off a single by Kathryn Wilkinson ’13 to close the gap. The Raiders increased their lead with two more runs in the sixth. The Bison could not answer with any more runs of their own to give the Raiders a second win.

Earlier in the day, Colgate broke open the first game early in their 3-2 win over the Bison posting three runs in the first inning. The Bison were quick to answer in the second. Ford led off the inning taking advantage of Colgate’s errors to advance to second. Colmenero drove Ford in with her first home run of the season to make it a one run game. Alex Maclean ’13 held the Raiders back from the mound allowing only one hit in the last five innings. The Orange and Blue offense could not rally giving Colgate their first win of the series.

The team’s games against St. Francis were postponed until Thursday afternoon. The Bison will be on the road again to face Holy Cross tomorrow and Sunday.

Ford ’11 moves into tie for third on all-time homer list

By Lindsay Regruto

Staff Writer

Alison Ford ’11 now stands tied for third in program history with 12 home runs after the softball team’s four-game series at home against Lehigh last weekend. The Bison went on to drop the double header to Lehigh on Saturday but managed to split on Sunday.

Despite dropping the first game 2-1, Ford’s first home run of the day put the Bison on the scoreboard first in the second inning. Bridget Gates ’13 sent all three batters back in order in the first three innings to hold the lead. The Mountain Hawks found success in the fifth inning, scoring both runs to take the lead. The Orange and Blue put players on base in the next innings but could not bring them around.

“As far as this past weekend goes, I think our bats are starting to come around, and we were able to get an important win against Lehigh,” Ford said. “They are a tough opponent, and the win against them in our last game of the weekend will give us good momentum to take on Colgate this weekend.”

The Orange and Blue came up short in their second game falling 7-5 to the Mountain Hawks again. Lehigh was the first to put a run on the board early in the first inning. Mary Horton ’13 and Lauren Fry ’11 both singled to get on base and were later brought in by another home run by Ford. The Orange and Blue’s lead was cut short with Lehigh scoring again to take a 4-3 lead over the Bison. In the bottom of the fifth, the Bison offense rallied to close the gap to 7-5 but could not bring enough people around by the seventh to grab the win.

The Orange and Blue dropped a close game 3-1 on Sunday to the Mountain Hawks in the first game of the double header. Lehigh took a 1-0 lead early on, and the score remained at a standstill until the sixth inning. Ford scored off a two out RBI-double by Elyse Colmenero ’11 to tie the score, tying Colmenero for 10th all-time in the program. Later in the sixth, Leigh managed two runs off the Bison to give them the lead and the win.

The final game of the day proved successful for the Bison as they defeated the Mountain Hawks 5-3. The game remained scoreless until the second inning when the Mountain Hawks put their first two runs on the board. The Orange and Blue started off the fifth inning with a run of their own. A two RBI-double by Kara Sullivan ’11 to left center resulted in a tie score. It came down to the last inning with score still tied. Fry reached based on a fielder’s choice, and Ford’s double put her into scoring position. A fielding error off Mallory Lyons ’14 brought both girls around to give the Bison the win.

The game on Tuesday against Coppin State was postponed due to weather. The Bison will be back on the field tomorrow and Sunday in Hamilton, N.Y. against Colgate.

Softball wins twice, loses twice

By Lindsay Regruto

Staff Writer

The softball team split four games in the Mount St. Mary’s Tournament last weekend, falling twice to Cornell and defeating Mount St. Mary’s twice. Elyse Colmenero ’11 started off the tournament on Saturday with a perfect game at the plate, going 3-3 with two RBIs against the Mountaineers to lead her team to victory.

Colmenero was not the only one on fire in the 4-2 defeat of the Mountaineers on Saturday. Lauren Fry ’11 started off the Bison with a double in the first at-bat of the game. Fry was brought in off a double by Colmenero to bring her over 100 runs in her four-year career so far. Fry rounded out the game with a pair of runs going 2-4 at the plate. Jessie Snyder ’11 doubled in the first to give the Orange and Blue their second run. Alex MacLean ’13 held the Mountaineers at bay, having one-two-three innings in the first and second and ending the day with five strike-outs in seven innings. The Mountaineers scored in the third to tie the game. The Orange and Blue fought back scoring in the fifth and seventh to seal the win.

The Bison were met with more difficulty in their second game of the day, falling 6-0 to Cornell. The Orange and Blue started off strong, putting two runners in scoring position in the first, but could not bring anyone around. The Big Red put runs on the board starting in the second and held off the Bison with a strong pitching game. Cornell picked up three more runs an inning later to seal the lead and the win.

The Orange and Blue met Cornell again in the first game on Sunday and fell 4-1. The Big Red was the first to put runs on the board. The Bison offense rallied in the fourth. Alison Ford ’11 doubled to right center and was eventually brought in off a double by Laura Sandford ’13, giving the Bison their first and only run of the game. Cornell’s defense proved strong, and the Bison could not close the gap, ending with their second loss of the tournament.

The Bison shut out Mount St. Mary’s 4-0 to end on a high note in the last game of the tournament. Goose eggs remained on the board, keeping the game tight until the sixth inning. The Bison were the first to break open the game, putting three runs on the board. The Mountaineers managed a hit off the Bison in the sixth but stranded the runner on base. Kasey Segiel ’14 was brought in off a single to center by Snyder to give the Bison their last run of the game. The Mountaineers were held off by a strong pitching performance by Bridget Gates ’13. Gates ended the game giving up only four hits with three strike outs, earning her third win of the season.

Games against Drexel scheduled for March 30 were postponed due to weather. The Orange and Blue will be back on the field April 2 at home to start Patriot League play against Lehigh.
