Rowing impresses in N.J.

Led by a gold-medal performance by the second varsity eight boat, the women’s rowing team came away with three top-two finishes by its varsity boats at the Knecht Cup on Sunday in Cherry Hill, N.J. The Bison’s two freshmen boats also came away with a pair of top-two finishes during the final day of action.

“I think our team performed really well this weekend against some tough competition,” Emily Gladstone ’13 said. “The 1V8 and 2V8’s grand finals were very close races and it gives us some great experience against solid competition going into our Patriot League Championship in 2 weeks.”

Facing intense competition from the Duke and Boston College boats, the Bison second varsity eight boat earned its first gold at the Knecht Cup in program history. Finishing in a time of 6:45.82, the Orange and Blue finished ahead of the Blue Devils and Golden Eagles by .97 seconds and 2.16 seconds respectively.

The top varsity eight boat fell in a close race to Duke by just over a second.  In the race, the Bison and Blue Devils boats completely blew away the rest of the field with the third-place boat from Buffalo finishing almost eight seconds off the pace.

In the lightweight race, the Orange and Blue added another silver to their collection, finishing behind Wisconsin by less than three seconds. Highlighting the day for the lightweight crew was the Bison’s nine-second victory over third-place Princeton, a team that the Orange and Blue had never beaten during the regular season until last week.

Capping off the day for the Bison were two strong performances by their freshmen eight and freshmen four boats. The freshmen eight managed to take the gold over Lehigh by nearly more than seven seconds, while the freshmen four finished second to Pittsburgh.

This weekend the Orange and Blue will not race, but will turn their attention to an important weekend at the end of April. On April 28, the Bison head to the Mid-Atlantic Rowing Championship in Lewisberry, Pa. before heading back to Cherry Hill for Patriot League Championships on April 29.

Rowing excels at home

The women’s rowing team picked up its first-ever regular season lightweight eight win over Princeton in the Bison’s only home event of the year last Saturday. The Bison varsity eight also won against Drexel.

The lightweight eight boat for the Orange and Blue is rowed by Caitlin Vogelsang ’12, Hannah Rozowski-Vogt ’12, Helena Craig ’15, Hilary Strong ’12, Anne Kirk ’12, Elizabeth Aigler ’13, Victoria Catharine ’14 and Jennifer Fish ’14, with Alexandra Higbee ’12 as coxswain.

They rowed to a 7:15.98 finish, more than three seconds ahead of Princeton. The victory did not come easily.

“It was a tough race, especially with Princeton closing our lead within the second half,” Vogelsang said. “Mentally and physically pushing through that was the key to ultimately pulling back out ahead.”

The day’s events also marked the first time the Bison have raced an Ivy League school at their home course.

The Bison’s openweight freshman eight raced against Princeton’s freshman lightweight eight and finished in 8:01.55, almost nine seconds ahead of their competitors. After only a short break, the same rowers lost to Drexel’s freshman eight.

In the second race after the break, the Bison’s second and third varsity eights competed against Drexel’s second varsity eight, finishing first and third respectively, with Drexel in second.

The day’s races finished up with the Orange and Blue varsity eight defeating Drexel’s varsity eight by almost 14 seconds.

Head coach Stephen Kish was pleased with his team’s performance.

“It was an exciting day for the team. Drexel University has a great rowing program and our boats did a great job putting together a strong race and defending our home course.  The Princeton lightweights finished second at the national championship last year, so finishing ahead of them definitely felt good and showed us that we can be competitive at the top level,” Kish said.

The next action for the Bison will be this weekend at the Knecht Cup on the Cooper River in Cherry Hill, N.J.

The women’s rowing team had a strong showing at the Occoquan Sprints on Sunday in Fairfax, Va. with all three varsity eight boats placing in the top seven, another varsity eight boat taking fourth in its final and a novice eight boat taking first in its finals.

“In the grand final, the varsity eight were in lanes one and two racing right next to each other just like every morning,” Christy Holodnik ’12 said. “Every morning the two boats push each other to be faster … and that is exactly what happened during the final.”

Two of the varsity eight boats with coxswains Jacqueline McKeone ’13 and Alexandra Higbee ’12 finished second and third respectively in the second heat of the competition while the third varsity eight boat with coxswain Katherine Anderson ’12 pulled out a first place finish in the third heat. McKeone’s and Anderson’s boats advanced to the final and took third and fourth respectively. The third varsity eight boat (cox: Higbee) advanced to the petite final taking first over Georgetown by almost five seconds to place seventh overall.

The second varsity eight boat took third in its heat and finished fourth in the final of its division. The Bison also had a strong showing in the novice eight with its boat taking first in its heat by seven seconds over Old Dominion. The novice eight boat continued to the final, beating out Delaware for first by about eight seconds.

“[We] had an exciting showing this past weekend,” Ally Cohen ’12 said. “All of our boats held their own against some tough competition.  We are looking forward to races to come and are excited to keep getting faster.”

The Bison will host Drexel and the Princeton Lightweights on Saturday at 8 a.m.

Rowing opens season in N.J.

By Chris McCree

The women’s rowing team opened up its spring season with a sixth and third place finish in two varsity races at the Murphy Cup this past Saturday. After placing first in its qualifying heat, the varsity “A” boat was 5:02.61 slower during the finals, finishing behind Navy, GW, Buffalo, Saint Joseph’s and Massachusetts.

“Our first race of the season was definitely a tough one. A lot of good teams compete at Murphy Cup each year, and this year was no exception,” Gabby Ors ’13 said. “Based on our training plan, I think our team did exceptionally well, putting not one, but two of our top eights in the grand and petite finals of the First Varsity Eight event.”

Along with the two varsity eight boats, the Orange and Blue had two novice boats medal at the event. The novice four boat edged out Colgate for first in its race, while the novice eight earned the silver behind Drexel.

“It was very exciting and we got to bring and race the whole team, which is always an experience seeing as we have over 60 girls rowing this year,” Sarah Riessen ’14 said. “I believe we performed very well and got some great racing experience under our belts for the coming season. Every boat was focused on their own race and was able to be very competitive in their heats and finals.”

Taking part in their first event since the end of October, the team will use this event as a launching point for the rest of the season as they look to earn their seventh consecutive Patriot League title.

“I’d say there are a lot of improvements to be made within individual boats, and we are still utilizing the first few weeks of the season to develop the lineups for the top two eights. However, I think the team as a whole is definitely ready and focused on making this season one of our best yet,” Ors said.

Women’s rowing excels in home race

By Thomas Walter

The women’s rowing team had their only home competition on the familiar waters of the Susquehanna River this past weekend. The Orange and Blue won seven of nine races, racing Delaware on Friday, while competing against Colgate, Old Dominion and more Delaware boats on Saturday.

The Bison took all four races against Delaware on Friday evening. The varsity eight, varsity lightweight eight, varsity four and second varsity lightweight eight were victorious against the Blue Hens.

On Saturday, the Bison did not have the same extraordinary success they had the previous day. The varsity eight lost in a competitive race to Old Dominion. The varsity lightweight eight beat Delaware by five seconds, while the third varsity eight finished 40 seconds behind them. The second varsity eight also bested Old Dominion by 30 seconds later that afternoon.

The varsity four looked to continue their success from the previous day, but Old Dominion was too much for the Bison to handle, and they finished behind ODU. The second varsity lightweight eight once again beat Delaware and also Colgate.

“This weekend felt a lot better than the previous ones,” Madeleine Armstrong ’14 said. “We’ve been making really good changes and progress in the past few days. We are trying push that even further in the coming weeks.”

The Bison will race in the Patriot League Championships this coming weekend in Worcester, Mass. on Lake Quinsigamond.

Women’s rowing races in Ohio, New Jersey

By Thomas Walter

Contributing Writer

The women’s rowing team again had dual-location meets this past weekend. The openweights traveled to the Griggs Reservoir in Ohio, participating in the Big Ten Duals. The lightweights traveled to the Cooper River in New Jersey, racing in the Knecht Cup. The openweights competed against some very stiff competition from Ohio State, Iowa and Louisville while the lightweights faced Buffalo and Wisconsin.

For most of the day on the Griggs Reservoir, the openweight Bison struggled to crack the top two. The varsity eight finished in third to Ohio State and Louisville in the morning session and then in the afternoon session finished third again to Louisville and Indiana.

The second varsity eight finished with the same morning results as the first varsity eight but managed to overcome Louisville in the afternoon session. The varsity four also finished in third behind Ohio State and Louisville in the morning, then finished in third again to Louisville and Indiana.

After finishing in second in the morning session, the second varsity four was determined to end the losing drought and beat Louisville by 13 seconds in the afternoon.

“In the afternoon, the second varsity four raced an entirely new lineup, one that hadn’t even practiced together before Saturday,” Laura Even ’14 said. “We were able to bring home Bucknell’s first win of the day, and that was a really great feeling.”

“I think that as a team we really showed that we can hold our own and manage to race our way even against some tough competition,” Even said.

The lightweight A team won their race Saturday at the Knecht Cup, while the B team finished in fourth. On Sunday, the A team finished eight seconds and five seconds behind Wisconsin’s A and C teams, respectively, to take third place.

The Bison will be back in action on Saturday on the Susquehanna River in their first and only home race of the year.

Women’s rowing finishes second across the board

By Thomas Walter

Contributing Writer

In their two matches this weekend, the women’s rowing team’s openweights finished second in all races in New Rochelle, N.Y., and the lightweights traveled to Princeton, N.J. where they also finished second against Princeton and MIT.

The Bison openweights struggled to find a win in either of their races against Columbia. The varsity eight finished 10 seconds behind Columbia, while the second varsity eight finished less than a second behind the Lions. The varsity four finished seven seconds behind their opponent. In the second varsity four event, the”B” boat took second place, nine seconds behind Columbia, and the “A” boat took third place, nine seconds behind the “B” team.

“We rowed well into a strong headwind and against the current, making it more difficult and causing times to increase,” Ally Rivard ’14 said.

The lightweights had a similarly challenging day, finishing in second place in both of their races. The varsity lightweight eight finished 16 seconds behind Princeton’s lightweights but 24 seconds in front of MIT. The second varsity eight finished just over 10 seconds behind Princeton. MIT finished third.

Next up for the Orange and the Blue is another split meet when the lightweights will row at the Knecht Cup, and the openweights will head to Griggs Reservoir in Ohio.

Women’s crew sends three boats to finals

By Thomas Walter

Contributing Writer

The women’s rowing team opened up its spring season this past weekend in Philadelphia at the Murphy Cup. The Bison faced tough competition including Delaware, Saint Joseph’s and Rutgers, managing to send three Bison boats to the finals.

The varsity eight boat won its heat with a time of 6:48. With an experienced team leading the boat, the Varsity A ended up finishing fifth in the final. In a tight race, the Bison only finished behind first-place Rutgers by 10 seconds. The strong finish by the upperclassmen set the tone for the rest of the day.

“The team overall did really well considering we were unable to practice on the Susquehanna due to flooding and lightning for a few days last week,” Ally Rivard ’14 said.

The junior varsity team also competed very well, finishing first in its heat with an impressive time of 6:49. In the finals of their meet, Saint Joseph’s edged out the Bison women for first place by a slim two seconds.

The novice team, a group of four rowers and a coxswain, also won its heat with a time of 7:52. Once again another team barely edged out the Orange and Blue for first, as Duquesne won by four seconds.

The Bison return to action this weekend in New Rochelle, N.Y. at the Orchard Beach Lagoon against Columbia.
