Women’s Swimming & Diving Defeat Three Patriot League Competitors

Claudia Silvers
Staff Writer

The women’s swimming and diving team took victory over three Patriot League rivals at home on Nov. 9, defeating Lafayette, American, and defending Patriot League Champion Navy.

Navy has been a strong competitor in the Patriot League, maintaining a streak of 34 straight victories in dual meets before the meet against the Bison. The Mids suffered their first loss to the Bison since the 2005-06 season.

“We were all so excited going into the meet and had the goal of giving Navy some good competition, but in all honesty we were beyond thrilled to have actually won!” Alanna Nawrocki ’16 said.

The Orange and Blue came out with a total of nine first-place finishes. Kelly Pontecorvo ’14 won the 1000 and 500 freestyle, Rachel McGoff ’17 won the 200 free, Katie Hetherington ’15 took first in both the one-meter and the three-meter in diving with teammates Tara Boyle ’15 and Tori Molchany ’15 claiming second and third, respectively. Kristen Purdy ’14 claimed first in the 100 butterfly, and Emma Levendoski ’16 won the 100 and 200 back.

“[It] was a huge win for the team. There was so much energy on deck, and everyone just kept feeding off of each other. That was, I would say, the most exciting swimming and diving meet I have ever been to,” Boyle said.

“I personally think this was one of the best meets we’ve had since I’ve been here. Not only did we remain positive the whole time but we all swam really well. Being a part of this meet was truly surreal,” Nawrocki said.

Jennifer Brennan ’14 said that their “goal this year was to try and be more competitive than Navy,” and the women certainly came out pleased.

“We went in with the attitude that we had nothing to lose and that we were just going to have fun and compete,” Brennan said. “Right from the start of the meet everyone was having incredible races and the energy on deck was insane. It was such a cool feeling to be able to beat Navy … We couldn’t have done it without coming together as a team and most importantly having fun.”

The final scores were 252-48 against American, 248-52 against Lafayette, and 159.5-140.5 against Navy.

The team fought hard and brought the heat and energy to the pool, coming out with incredible wins. The Bison will be back in Kinney Natatorium for the Bucknell Invitational on Nov. 22-24.

The Orange and the Blue swimming and diving teams had solid finishes in the Patriot League Championship this past weekend, with the women securing second place behind Navy and the men finishing third behind Navy and Army. The women secured four individual titles on Saturday and a strong performance from Mike Nicholson ’14 helped each team into the rankings.

On Feb. 21, Kelly Pontecorvo ’14 broke the school record in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:50.26 seconds. The 400 medley relay consisting of Emma Levendoski ’16, Alanna Nawrocki ’16, Lauren Perry ’15 and Emily Wright ’14 also broke the school record by almost a full second, with 3:45.83.

The Orange and the Blue won three more gold medals on Feb. 22. Tara Boyle ’15 won gold in the one-meter dive, Levendoski took home another gold in the 100-meter back and Perry took a gold in the 200-meter free. By the end of day two, the Bison trailed Navy by 113 points and Colgate by 24 points.

Day three on Feb. 23 saw Pontecorvo, Levendoski and Perry all win their third gold medals of the weekend. In addition, Katie Hetherington ’15 won her first gold medal and was named Female Diver of the Meet.

Nicholson has rewritten many of the Bison record books already and continued to do so last weekend. On day one, the two-time All-Patriot League selection broke his own school record in the 200-yard individual medley, going on to finish in third in the event with a time of 1:48.81. Nicholson, along with Matt Hadley ’14, Trevor Reitz ’14 and Christian Treat ’13 finished third in the 400 medley relay.

Day two saw Nicholson and Treat break more school records, but the Bison still lost ground to Navy. On day three, Nicholson rewrote the history books again as he tied for fourth in the 200 breast, marking three consecutive nights in a row that Nicholson broke school records. Despite his efforts, the Bison were unable to surpass Army for second place.

The Bison will continue their 2012-13 season at the ECAC Championships this weekend at Harvard.

The women’s swimming and diving team gave a strong performance on its Senior Day meet, decisively ousting Patriot League rival Lehigh 184-102.

The Orange and Blue hosted Lehigh on Jan. 26 for the second-to-last meet of their regular season. Six of the Bison women, Lisa Bolle ’13, Anna Griest ’13, Morgan Oxley ’13, Elizabeth Porcellio ’13, Kelly Purcell ’13 and Marisa Taddeo ’13, were recognized before the meet.

“Lehigh is a strong team and we handled the challenge well as a group. In addition, it was a great way to send out our senior class since this meet served as our senior recognition day,” head coach Dan Schinnerer said.

The honored seniors performed strongly, with Oxley and Porcellio both a part of the relay team, along with Emma Levendoski ’16 and Emily Wright ’14, that won the 200 medley. Levendoski also had two individual victories of her own in the 100 back and 200 back.

Lauren Perry ’15 posted three victories. She won the 100 free with teammates Wright and Kaitlyn Utkewicz ’14 following close behind her for a top three Orange and Blue finish, as well as the 200 free where she blew the field away by 3.96 seconds. She finished with a victory in the 100 fly, a race she swam only three times this season.

“I was pleased with how I swam this weekend and I am excited to see what the championship meets will bring,” Perry said. “I think the team needs to continue to stay focused and maintain a positive attitude going into the rest of the season.”

Other notable performances for the Bison included Emily Norton ’15 with victories in the 100 breast and 200 breast, as well as Kelly Pontecorvo ’14 taking first in the 1,000 free and second in the 500 free. For diving, Katie Hetherington ’15 won the three meter board, while Tara Boyle ’15 took the one meter board with a career best score of 251.18.

“As we close out our season and work towards out championship meets in February and March, we continue to focus on improving in the details of our swims and dives. With more rest and less intense practices, we expect our team to sharpen their skills and peak for the championships,” Schinnerer said.

The Bison will finish out their regular season this weekend by hosting several opposing teams for the Bison Invite starting Saturday at 10 a.m.

W. Swimming wins home meet

Katherine Harris

The women’s swimming and diving place first in a field of six other teams at the Bucknell Invitational, ousting second place Delaware by just 2.5 points.

“Our team did an awesome job! We were truly united as a women’s team and it showed in our support and hard work. We gave everything our all in every event from diving to the relays and all races in between,” Kelly Pontecorvo ’14 said.

The Bison started out strong on Nov. 16 in Kinney Natatorium, finishing in second to Delaware by 17 points at the end of the night. Elizabeth Porcellio ’13 won the 200 IM with a time of 2:05.74, while teammate Ashley Henderson ’16 followed in fourth place with 2:07.30.

Porcellio was also part of the 400 medley team that took third place, along with Emma Levendoski ’16, Morgan Oxley ’13 and Lauren Perry ’15, posting a time of 3:53.80 that took 10th in the school record books. Katie Hetherington ’15 led the diving team with a second-place finish in three-meter diving, scoring a season-high 255.15.

The Orange and Blue then took the lead on Nov. 17, coming back to lead Delaware by eight points at the end of the day. Porcellio once again had a strong day, winning the 400 IM with a personal best time of 4:25.08 that moved her into third in school history. She also took fifth in the 200 free. She joined teammates Perry, Stephanie Koziol ’15 and Pontecorvo to win the 800 free relay, posting the second best program time in the event’s history. Perry also had another victory for the Bison on the day, winning the 200 freestyle with a school-record breaking time.

The final day of the invitational was down to the wire, with the Bison finally prevailing over Delaware by a mere 2.5 points. Pontecorvo won the 1,650 free with a time of 16:41.18, and also broke the school record with her 1,000 free time of 10:04.55. Levendoski also had another impressive day, recording a second-place finish in the 200 back. On the diving team, Hetherington finished third in the one-meter diving, with teammate Tori Molchany ’15 following in fifth place.

“Individually, I was very happy with my races,” Pontecorvo said. “I went a personal best in my 1,000 freestyle going out in the 1,650, so it makes me very optimistic for Patriots in February. I could hear the whole team cheering at that point and there was a roar in the crowd that gave me the extra motivation to finish my best.”

The Bison will compete at home again this weekend, hosting Binghamton tomorrow at 1 p.m.

The women’s swimming and diving team posted a winning performance against Lafayette on Nov. 10 at Kinney Natatorium. Nine different Bison won at least one event, and the team won 14 of 16 events, propelling them to a 194.5-103.5 victory against the Leopards. The Bison moved to 2-3 overall and 2-1 versus Patriot League foes.

Ashley Henderson ’16 won both the 100 breast and the 200 backstroke, Lauren Perry ’15 won the 100 freestyle and the 100 fly and Katie Hetherington ’15 won both the one-meter diving and the three-meter diving. Their performances were crucial to the Bison’s success against Lafayette. Henderson was followed by teammate Emily Norton ’15 in the 100 breast, and her 2:07.76 seconds time in the 200 backstroke bested teammate Kristen Purdy ’14 by 2.58 seconds.

“We had a fun meet this weekend, and it was great to finally be able to compete at our own pool. I’m really looking forward to see what we can do this weekend at our invitational,” Perry said.

On the diving front, the Bison claimed the top five spots in the two diving competitions. Hetherington (a school record holder) was trailed by Tori Molchany ’15 in second and Tara Boyle ’15 in third off of the one-meter board. Boyle and Molchany finished second and third off of the three-meter board, respectively.

Other notable performances included first place for Melissa Besman ’14 in the 1,000 freestyle, Stephanie Koziol ’15 in the 200 freestyle, Purdy in the 100 fly, Norton in the 200 breast and Kelly Pontecorvo ’14 in the 500 freestyle. In addition, the Bison claimed both relays as Purdy, Jennifer Brennan ’14, Morgan Oxley ’13 and Kaitlyn Utkewicz ’14 won the 200 medley relay. Additionally, Perry, Utkewicz, Emily Wright ’14 and Elizabeth Porcellio ’13 won the 400 free relay.

“Our team had a lot of fun this past weekend. It was our first home meet and many of us got to swim events we don’t normally swim,” Purdy said. “It’s amazing how much we have improved since the beginning of the season, and this past weekend we really got to see the versatility our team has. Our team has a lot of energy and potential this year. I’m looking forward to the meet this weekend and excited to see what the rest of the season holds.”

Coming off a win against Lafayette, the Bison will hope to post another strong showing as they host the Bucknell Invitational from Nov. 16-18.

The women’s swimming and diving team held its own in a dual meet against American and Navy, defeating the host Eagles 252-36 but falling to the defending Patriot League champion Midshipmen 185-113.

Kelly Pontecorvo ’14 (1,000 freestyle) and Emma Levendoski ’16 (100 backstroke) led the Orange and Blue in the swimming competition held at Reeves Pool in Washington D.C., both earning first place finishes in their respective events. Levendoski posted a time of 57.98 seconds in her heat. Although she already held the eighth fastest time for this event in Bison program history, she improved her record by 0.26 seconds. Additionally, Levendoski was the runner-up in the 200 backstroke. Pontecorvo also added to her contribution with a third place finish in the 500 freestyle.

Leading the Bison in diving were Tara Boyle ’15 and Katie Hetherington ’15, who finished with first place victories in the one-meter and three-meter boards, respectively. In support, Tori Molchany ’15 was fourth off both boards, followed by teammate Lisa Bolle ’13 who finished seventh in the one-meter and fifth in the three-meter.

“Our meet this weekend went very well,” Levendoski said. “We are continuing to improve and are getting faster at every meet. It was the first meet against teams in our conference so it was a good gauge of our competition. We are looking forward to our meet this weekend against Lafayette and the Bison Invitational next weekend.”

The weekend left the Bison’s overall record this season at 1-3. Tomorrow the Orange and Blue face Lafayette at home before the Bucknell Invitational takes place on Nov. 16-18.

Men’s and women’s swimming exhibit strength at UConn

Cooper Mead
Writer

The men’s swimming and diving team traveled to Connecticut to face UConn and Fordham with high hopes of beating UConn in only their second meeting of all time and continuing their strong record against Fordham (8-4 all-time). Mike Nicholson ’14 and Ben Seketa ’15 led the Bison in their first meet of the season, as Nicholson was the only two event winner. He won the 200-yard butterfly by 2.47 seconds and the 200 individual medley by 1.92 seconds. Seketa finished first in the 200 breast stroke, was runner-up in the 100 breast stroke and finished fourth in the 200 individual medley.

The Bison also recorded second-place finishes in the 200 medley relay and 400 free relays. Cameron James ’16 and Trevor Reitz ’14 finished second in the 200 free and 100 free, respectively. These performances were enough to propel the Bison to a 179-120 win over Fordham, but fell short of UConn, losing 175-125.

Jon Jones ’15 was the top diver for the Bison off of the one-meter board, tallying a score of 220.20, six points below his career high. This placed him third overall.

“We had a lot of people step up–especially late in the meet–that helped drive us past Fordham and closer to UConn. Losing to UConn was tough, but it will help us grow into the team we need to be to succeed later in the season,” Reitz said.

The women’s swimming and diving team also traveled to UConn as Emma Levendoski ’16 led the team and posted a new program top-10 mark in the 100-yard backstroke. Lauren Perry ’15 and Elizabeth Porcellio ’13 also tallied victories for the Bison in the 200 free and 200 individual medley, respectively. Despite such efforts, the Bison were defeated by UConn 186.5-113.5, and Fordham by a margin of 173.5-126.5.

Levendoski also finished second in the 200 backstroke with a time of 58.24, placing her  at eighth in program history. Her time puts her as the second active Bison swimmer on the list along with Jennifer Brennan ’14.

Perry also had a strong performance, placing third in the 50 free and fourth in the 100 free. She was a member of the 200 medley relay and the 400 free relay, which placed third. Similarly, Porcellio also placed third in the 100 fly and came in sixth place in the 200 free.

Tori Molchany ’15 and Tara Boyle ’15 were the Orange and Blue’s best divers for the day, coming in third off of the one-meter board and fourth off of the three-meter board, respectively.

“I was pleased with our overall performance at the meet,” head coach Dan Schinnerer said [Bucknell Women’s Swimming and Diving Outscored by UConn and Fordham, bucknellbison.com, Oct. 20, 2012].  “Our main emphasis at this point in the season is to see improvement from meet-to-meet and we saw a lot of progress today compared to where we were against UMBC a few weeks ago. That said, we have to make a significant improvement to get to where we ultimately want to be as a team.”

Both the women’s and the men’s squads will have one week off before they travel to Easton, Pa. to compete against American, Lafayette and Navy on Nov. 3.

Swimming opens season

Lauren Boone
Contributing Writer

The men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams began their season against UMBC in Baltimore last weekend with the men winning eight races and the women winning seven.  The meet was not scored, so as to give the teams a chance to experience competition early in the season.

For the women, Emma Levendoski ’16 led her team with the most wins in her first collegiate competition. She took first in the 50, 100 and 200 backstroke, while Kelly Pontecorvo ’14 won the 500 and 1,000 freestyle. To round out the first place finishes for the Bison, Lauren Perry ’15 won the 200 freestyle and Elizabeth Porcellio ’13 won the 200 individual medley (IM). Additionally, Perry was the runner-up in the 50 freestyle, while Porcellio finished second in the 100 and 400 IM.

“Overall, the meet was a success and a good start to the season. It was a low stress meet so it was really just a good way for me, as a freshman, to see how the team works in a meet situation. Everyone swam as well as they expected to and we all had a great time,” Levendoski said.

On the men’s side, Cameron James ’16 proved himself with a trifecta of victories, winning the 50, 100 and 200 freestyle heats. Mike Nicholson ’14 won the 200 and 400 IM races, while Trevor Reitz ’14 won the 50 butterfly. Ben Seketa ’15 won the 200 breaststroke and Christian Treat ’13 won the 100 breaststroke.

“I think the meet this past weekend was a great first step in our season. We wanted to start off well as a team, and I feel we did just that,” James said. “This was my first competition as a member of the men’s swimming team, so I wanted to take advantage of the opportunity to prove myself. However, it is still early in our season, which means we have a lot of work ahead of us as a team. Our goal is to get better every week, and we began looking forward to our next contest at the conclusion of Saturday’s competition.”

Additionally, Brian Phillips ’16 placed second in the 1,000 freestyle, JT Nangle ’16 finished second in the 50 backstroke and third in the 100 backstroke and Wes Marberry ’16 took third in the 200 backstroke.

The men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams will be back in action in two weeks when they travel to Storrs, Conn. to take on UConn on Oct. 20.

Female Athlete of the Year

By Katherine Harris

Staff Writer

Women’s diver Katie Hetherington ’15 could have never anticipated the immediate success she would have when she first stepped into Arthur D. Kinney Jr. Natatorium this fall.

“I think I had a really great season and I accomplished a lot more than I expected to,” Hetherington said. “My only real expectation was to make it to Patriots.”

Because Hetherington was already a successful diver in high school before she arrived on campus, especially in the three-meter board, coaches knew that she was going to make a big impact on the diving program. Even they didn’t anticipate exactly how much of a splash she was going to make in the competitive waters.

“I knew she was going to be good, but I had no idea she was as good as she is,” diving coach Errol Carter said. “I knew she would be our next team record holder but had no idea it would all happen in her first semester.”

While it is often difficult for first-years to come into a program and succeed right away, standing out was not an issue for Hetherington, whose success in the pool was immediate. In fact, she was already breaking records in her first-ever collegiate meet this fall.

In the meet on Oct. 1, Hetherington outperformed not only the divers from opposing UMBC, but also a very talented group of teammates, diving her way into the school record books. Her score of 264.68 broke the one-meter board record for the Bison, and also created what she cites as one of her most memorable performances of the season.

“I was very nervous at the beginning of the meet because I expected a lot of myself, as I do every meet. Honestly, the possibility of breaking a record never crossed my mind. I was just hoping to not mess up too badly,” Hetherington said. “When I was told I broke the one-meter record, I was ecstatic. I would not have been more excited.”

And the success didn’t stop there by a long shot as Hetherington continued her first collegiate season. On Nov. 18, she broke the three-meter board school record at the Bucknell Invitational with a score of 285.05.

“[Hetherington] was in second or third place after the prelims and her score was within a couple of points of the record. I recall her saying, ‘I want to break that record.’ That night during finals, she shattered the record and qualified for the NCAA Zone Diving Meet, the second [Bison] to do so in my time [13 seasons] as coach here,” Carter said.

By the end of the season, Hetherington had won both boards on five different occasions for a total of 13 overall wins. At the Patriot League Championships, a third-place finish in the 1m and a second in the 3m rounded out her impressive in-conference season.

Part of what has made Hetherington so successful in her career already is her willingness to learn and listen to what her coaches have to say to her. She has also supported her teammates in a sport where individual competition is very intense to say the least.

“She is not only a great athlete, but a great teammate as well. She is so humble, and she brings an energy to practice that is completely unique from everyone else on the team,” teammate Tara Boyle ’15 said. “It is way too hard to pick a best performance of hers from this season because she was so consistently successful all year.”

Hetherington’s scores also qualified her for the NCAA Zone “A” Diving Meet, a competition where the top four divers qualify for seeds in the NCAA Championships. The first-year represented the Bison as their solo competitor at the event, placing 41st on the 1m board and 36th on the 3m board with scores of 192.75 and 204.85 in the respective preliminaries.

“Katie’s such a strong competitor because she never lets herself get psyched out mentally.  She always keeps it positive and has so much fun in practice and at meets, making her not only a better diver but also an influential contributor to the team dynamic,” teammate Liz Porcellio ’13 said.

Even with all of this success as a first-year, Hetherington is far from satisfied. She has already set her sights on her goals for next year and hopes to take her impressive performances to new heights in her sophomore season.

“Next year my goal would be to qualify to Zones again and hopefully perform better there. I would also like to learn some harder dives to increase the difficulty of my list,” Hetherington said.

The first-year’s coaches are also excited at the prospect of her improving even more in the years to come. In the off-season, she will be working with them constantly to keep herself ahead of the competition, especially many of her own teammates who are working very hard to reach her level of success as well.

“I feel that if Katie gets over her hangups that many divers have, and starts to believe how good she can be, the sky is the limit,” Carter said. “She already has the dives and skill; we need to fine-tune some of those skills and get her tough dives consistently good. If her next few years are anything like this one, I see the records getting higher and higher and her doing better and better at the NCAA Zone meet and potentially getting close to Nationals.”

Women’s swimming takes seventh at ECAC Championships

By Lindsay Regruto

Senior Writer

The women’s swimming and diving team earned a seventh-place finish at the three-day ECAC Championships last weekend in Annapolis, Md. The Bison ended the season on a strong note with a fourth-place finish by Lauren Perry ’15 in the 100 freestyle followed by a sixth-place finish by Kaitlyn Sweeney ’12 in the 200 fly. Perry’s finish at 51.93 moved her into the ninth spot on the program’s all-time top 10 list.

“ECACs was a great way to end our season,” Perry said. “All of our hard work throughout the year paid off, and I’m very proud of our team.”

The Bison’s performance on Saturday put them in sixth place overall at the end of the day. Tara Boyle ’15 earned a fifth-place finish on the three-meter springboard. The first-year’s score of 256.20 in the preliminaries moved her into fifth in program history. Jennifer Brennan ’14 secured a second-place finish for the Bison in the 100 backstroke. The Orange and Blue saw success in the 100 fly with three top 10 finishes. Elizabeth Porcellio ’13, Alex Panzarino ’14 and Sweeney finished seventh, eighth and ninth, respectively. Porcellio finished with a 57.34, seventh in school history. The Bison had a strong showing in the relays with a fourth-place finish in the 200 medley and a seventh-place finish in the 800 freestyle relay.

“Overall, ECACs was a fun meet with a really great atmosphere that allowed our swimmers to do well,” Panzarino said. “For our seniors it was their last races, so it was bittersweet to watch [them] finishing their swimming careers.”

On Friday, Perry earned a fifth-place finish in the 50 free while Tori Molchany ’15 took home a fifth-place finish on the one-meter diving board.

“ECACs was a very exciting meet this year. We had a lot more swimmers attend this year, and our excitement level was much higher. Going into the season, one of our team goals was to place [in the] top eight, so we were very happy that we got seventh place,” Caroline Higgins ’14 said.

Before traveling to ECACs, the team earned seven All-Patriot League Honors. Boyle and Perry earned first-team honors while Stephanie Koziol ’15, Katie Hetherington ’15, Kelly Pontecorvo ’14, Porcellio and Brennan all earned second-team honors.
