The Orange and Blue kicked off their season this past weekend at the Bison Invitational, where the Bison played in five matches against Mercyhurst, George Washington, Brown, Villanova and Marist. The Orange and Blue ended the weekend’s contests with a record of 3-2.

The Bison launched the weekend competition and their season with a 14-5 win over Mercyhurst. Highlight players of the game were Hannah Sunday ’16, Krystle Morgan ’13 and Julianne Valdes ’14. Sunday led the Bison with five goals, while Morgan and Valdes contributed three goals each. The Bison led the Lakers 7-1 at halftime, maintaining a lead of at least six goals throughout the second half.

Against George Washington, the Orange and Blue fell 10-9. The Bison outscored the Colonials 6-3 during the second half, but eventually gave way to George Washington’s offensive pressure. Sunday and Valdes each posted three goals for the Orange and the Blue in the loss.

The Bison then rebounded to defeat Brown 10-9. With the score tied 9-9 and just 1:36 left to play, Taylor Barnett ’15 scored the game-winning goal. To secure the victory, Rena Heim ’14 saved a shot on goal with less than a minute to go.

The Orange and Blue added to their wins with a 9-4 victory over Villanova. Sunday scored four goals, assisting in an 8-0 lead during the game. This win brought the Bison’s weekend record thus far to 3-1.

The Bison lost their final match of the weekend 9-6 to Marist. Entering the fourth quarter, the Bison trailed by only one goal. Within just under two minutes, the Red Foxes posted three goals against the Bison to put the match out of reach.

“This weekend was a great start to our season; it was a highly anticipated weekend because we had been practicing for so long. I think that the team played well together. We made a lot of mistakes but we now know exactly what we need to focus on in practice,” Sunday said.

After the opening weekend’s competition, the Bison will be back in action against Harvard and George Washington on March 2 and 3 .

The women’s tennis team travelled to Olean, N.Y. to face Niagara and St. Bonaventure this past weekend. After dropping the match against Niagara 4-3, the Orange and Blue pulled out a 5-2 win over St. Bonaventure, snapping a three-match losing streak.

Against St. Bonaventure, the Bison won the doubles point with ease. On the number one doubles court, Maria Cioffi ’16 and Elena Vidrascu ’14 dropped only one game to the Bonnies, winning 8-1. Lydia Colvin ’15 and Stephanie Pino ’16, on the second doubles court, won  8-4. St. Bonaventure defaulted the third doubles court.

The Orange and Blue were successful in their singles matches as well. St. Bonaventure defaulted another match, giving the Bison another victory in the sixth singles position.

At the number three singles position, Colvin won her match with a score of 6-3, 6-2. Jen Bush ’15 was also successful, winning her match 6-1, 6-1. On court five, Pino claimed the final point for the Bison without dropping a single game (6-0, 6-0).

“Overall, the team came out with great energy and focus. We secured the doubles point, winning both first and second doubles with relative ease. As far as singles goes, it was easy to see that we all really wanted to win, supporting one another immensely in the process,” Colvin said.

Against Niagara, Cioffi and Vidrascu gave the Bison a good start in the first doubles match with an 8-5 decision, while Bush and Christie Schneider ’15 also won their doubles match 8-3. Vidrascu and Pino also contributed individual victories, but the Bison were unable to overcome a late Niagara comeback in the loss.

The Orange and Blue will be back on the courts tomorrow at 1 p.m. in Quakertown, Pa. against Hofstra.

The women’s basketball team had a solid start against Lafayette on Feb. 16, but the Leopards’ second half turnaround guided them to a 66-61 overtime victory over the Orange and Blue. After a low-scoring first half at Lehigh on Feb. 20, a late scoring run by the Mountain Hawks gave the Orange and Blue a 49-37 loss. The team is now 13-13 overall (4-7 in conference play) with three regular season games remaining.

Audrey Dotson ’15 scored nine points that led to a 13-9 start for the Bison. The Orange and Blue ended the half on a 20-5 run, leading to a 37-21 advantage at the break. Katherine Harris ’15 started the run with a jumper, while Lindsay Horbatuck’s ’13 free throw shooting and Shelby Romine’s ’14 two three-pointers cushioned the Bison lead.

The Leopards opened the second half with a 10-0 run. Dotson countered the blitz with back-to-back lay-ups to make it a 13-point game. Despite the effort, the Leopards scored 12 unanswered points. The Orange and Blue countered with a 6-0 run of their own and carried a 54-47 lead with 2:38 remaining.

“I think we went through too long of a scoring lull and allowed Lafayette to score the way they wanted to in the second half. They hit some important shots and made great plays and we needed to shut that down earlier in the half,” Dotson said.

Lafayette fouled Alyssa Dunn ’13 with seven seconds left in the game. She made one of two free throws to make it 55-53. Lafayette forced the game into overtime on a game-tying jump shot as time expired.

In overtime, Lafayette got its first lead of the game since the opening minutes of the game. The Bison were unable to regain the advantage, as they were outscored 11-6 in the extra period. Dotson led all scorers with 19 points. Romine was also in double figures with 11 points to go along with five assists.

Despite the Bison’s 16-point halftime lead, Lafayette’s 53.8 percent showing in the second half (14-26) propelled them to force overtime and claim the victory.

“The Lafayette game served as a reminder that the game isn’t over until the time runs out. In this league anybody can beat anybody and just because you have a lead doesn’t mean that the game is over,” Dotson said.

At Lehigh, the first half score was 18-8 in favor of the Mountain Hawks. The Bison offense was stronger in the second half, as they cut the lead to two with 4:31 left in the game. Unfortunately, Lehigh engineered a 12-2 run to steal the win. Romine led the Orange and Blue with 20 points, while Dotson scored 12 points and registered four blocks.

“I think in future games we need to keep focusing on our game plan and what we need to do to win games. We know that to win games we need to play our defense, outrebound our opponents and win the toughness battle,” Horbatuck said.

The Bison return to action on Saturday when they travel to Holy Cross before facing American in Washington, D.C. on Feb. 27.

Romine scores 1,000th carer point, Bison lose twice

Ajan Caneda

Copy Editor

Shelby Romine ’14 scored her 1,000th career point against Army on Feb. 9, but it would not be enough for the Bison to overcome an off shooting night, as they fell 44-35 in Sojka Pavilion. The Bison had a stronger offensive performance against Colgate but suffered a 58-51 loss to the Raiders on Feb. 13, dropping them to 13-11 overall (4-5 in conference play). Romine became the 20th member of the program’s 1,000 point club, a feat that was last accomplished during the 2008-2009 season.

“I feel honored. People look at the 1,000th point milestone as a personal achievement, but I couldn’t have gotten there without my teammates, coaches and parents who motivate me to put the work in. I’m extremely thankful because without them I could have never reached this goal,” Romine said.

During the game, both teams experienced offensive struggles, but the Orange and Blue came away with a 19-17 edge at the break. Romine scored 10 of her 16 points in the first half. Neither team got beyond a four-point advantage due to shooting woes from both squads.

“Now that we are in the second round of Patriot League play, I expect scores to be lower because everyone knows our strengths and weaknesses. We need to find ways past that,” Romine said.

In the second half, Felicia Mgbada ’13 scored a lay-up that gave the Bison a 22-19 lead. After Army regained the advantage, Rachel Voss ’13 and Katherine Harris ’15 made consecutive baskets to claim a two-point lead. Unfortunately, Army closed the game on a 20-9 run, including two key three-pointers and successful late game free throw shooting.

“I think offensively we were all a little off that game. That being said, however, we can’t allow ourselves to go through scoring lulls like we did and we are working on fixing that in practice. I also think Army executed their defensive plan very well which added to our scoring drought,” Audrey Dotson ’15 said. “On a positive note, the fact that we could hold Army to such a small number of points is a credit to our defense and hard work.”

Neither team had a strong shooting night, as the Bison shot 26.7 percent from the field (12-45), while Army made 26.2 percent (16-61) of its shot attempts.

Against Colgate, the Orange and Blue had double-digit performances by Alyssa Dunn ’13, Mgbada and Romine. The Bison relied on their free throw shooting early but missed free throw opportunities in the second half allowed the Raiders to pull ahead late and clinch their first conference win. Mgbada had 14 points, seven rebounds and two blocks, Dunn scored 14 points of her own and Romine continued her balanced play with 11 points and seven assists.

“In the next game, and in the games left in the season, we are really going to try and be more aggressive on offense even when our shots aren’t dropping as well as keeping up our defensive pressure,” Dotson said.

The Bison will face two conference rivals at home, as they battle Lafayette Saturday night and Lehigh on Feb. 20. Tip-off for both games is scheduled at 7 p.m. in Sojka Pavilion.

Women’s tennis suffers first losses of season to Pittsburgh and Duquesne

Katherine Harris

Senior Writer

The women’s tennis team had a tough weekend on the road, battling against Pittsburgh on Feb. 8 to an eventual 6-1 loss, followed by another tough 6-1 defeat to Duquesne the next day.

The Bison picked up their first loss of the season when they traveled to the Alpha Tennis and Fitness Club to compete against a tough Pittsburgh squad. Maria Cioffi ’16 led the Bison on the day, defeating her No. 2 singles opponent 6-3, 6-2. Cioffi also boosted the Bison’s score with a doubles victory, partnering with Elena Vidrascu ’14 to score an 8-3 victory in the No. 1 match. Unfortunately, these were the only highlights of the day for the Bison, who ultimately fell in a 6-1 loss.

The Orange and Blue also had trouble against Duquesne. Lydia Colvin ’15 notched the only victory for the Bison on the day, defeating her opponent in the No. 3 singles match 6-7, 6-4, 10-7 at the end of the day. Once again, the Bison were not able to build on the victory, ending with a 6-1 score for the match.

“In my opinion, the scores didn’t reflect the quality of the matches and the fight that each one of us was willing to give,” Colvin said. “We definitely made a conscious effort to support each other immensely on the court, cheering for others even when we were down. [We] need to continue to work hard in practice to reflect that effort in future matches. We’re excited for this weekend of new opportunity.”

The Bison will now prepare for their next matches this weekend, facing Niagara and St. Bonaventure in New York.

The Orange and Blue claimed four gold medals at the Bucknell Winter Classic, the last regular season meet before the Patriot League Championships. Abby Monaghan ’13 defended her weight throw title from last year, while three first-years claimed new titles.

The Bison tasted a portion of their success in the field events. Monaghan won the weight throw event, posting a mark of 51-3. She broke the 50-foot barrier for the first time in the past three competitions.

In the pole vault, Emily Ando ’14 cleared 11-3.75, tying for first place. In the shot put event, Sophia Nnadi ’16 claimed victory with a mark of 43-10. This was the first time that Nnadi broke the 40-foot mark. This was also Nnadi’s first collegiate victory.

The Orange and Blue were also victorious in the sprints. Jess Bridle ’16 took first place in the 200-meter race with a time of 26.05, while Chrissy Haney ’16 claimed victory in 1:18.74 in the 500-meter race. In the 60-meter event, Kim Nagotko ’15 took third with 7.88. In the preliminary round, Nagotko recorded a new personal best time at 7.80.

“This weekend was great for individuals, including myself, and for the team as a whole. I believe this was a high intensity meet because it was the last indoor meet for the seniors. Not only were the seniors high in spirits and putting all of their effort in their last throws, but all individuals were trying to accomplish their goals before the league meet. I definitely exceeded my goals and I’m super happy about that,” Nnadi said. “I look forward to competing in my first league meet this weekend and to finish my indoor season with the team.”

The Bison will be back in competition this weekend at the Patriot League Championships. They will defend their title on Army’s turf in West Point, N.Y. from Feb. 15–17.

Women’s tennis starts off season with a 5-2 victory

Katherine Harris

Senior Writer

The women’s tennis team started off its spring season with a decisive 5-2 victory against Saint Francis (Pa.) on Feb. 2.

“I think our team came out with a great deal of energy for our first match of the season. We all remained positive throughout our matches and I think that brought us to victory,” Lydia Colvin ’15 said.

Maria Cioffi ’16 and Colvin led the Bison as they competed at the West Branch Tennis Club, with Cioffi winning the No. 2 singles match 6-4, 6-1, and Colvin ousting her opponent in the No. 3 match 6-0, 6-2. Jen Bush ’15 and Christie Schneider ’15 also won the No. 5 and No. 6 matches, respectively, to round out the field for the Orange and Blue.

“[Head coach Rebecca] Helt has been saying a lot lately that ‘practice doesn’t make perfect, perfect practice makes perfect.’ I think if we stay in that mindset and push ourselves to stay dedicated and focused in training, then we’re in for a very successful and rewarding season,” Bush said.

Cioffi and Colvin also performed strongly in the doubles portion of the match, as both of them earned another victory on the day with their 8-3 win in the No. 2 match. Bush also got her second win on the day, as her and Stephanie Pino ’16 won their No. 3 doubles match 8-4.

“The more matches we get under our belts, the more confident our players will feel. Confidence leads to better execution. I think we have good talent, we just need to see who gains the confidence to compete in the big matches,” Helt said.

The Bison will travel to Pittsburgh this weekend to compete in matches against both Pittsburgh and Duquesne.

W. track wins close contest

The Bison women’s track and field team traveled to Ohio to compete in the Youngstown State Invitational, where two school records were broken and a victory was claimed. Caroline Tolli ’13 rewrote the record books in the 1,000 meter, while Sasha Hornock ’13 registered a new best in the 60 meter race. The Orange and Blue were victorious by just 0.16 points.

Tolli led the competition in the 1,000 meter event, claiming first with 2:50.88. Close behind Tolli was runner-up Hana Casalnova ’14 with 2:54.22.

The Orange and Blue stole two additional individual wins. Katie Jessee ’15 won the 5,000 meter with 17:42.36, while Jennifer Zymet ’14 claimed first in the 500 meter with 1:16.06.

On the field, Yanelis Mestre ’15 posted a career best in the pole vault event. She tied for fifth, clearing a height of 11-5.75. In the long jump, Olivia Massey ’13 and Alyssa Cardillo ’14 took fourth and fifth place, respectively. In the weight throw, Abby Monaghan ’13 claimed fourth.

After the first day of competition, the Bison collected a total of 85.5 points. This put the Orange and Blue in the lead by 12.5 points over Dayton, who stood in second place.

The next day of competition proved just as successful for the Bison. Hornock set a new record in the 60 meter with 7.74 seconds, while Tolli claimed another first-place finish in the 800 meter with 2:13.17.

Kim Nagotko ’15 was the runner-up in the 200 meter event with 25.13. Beth Braunegg ’14 claimed second place in the mile with 5:01.12. Montana DiPietrantonio ’15 took the bronze in the 3,000 meter event with 10:14.91. Finally, the 4×400 relay team finished third with 3:52.45.

The Bison ultimately reigned as victors with a lead of less than one point over Duquesne.

“The team had a good meet overall. We were able to beat Duquesne, which shows how much we have improved as a team this season. We had previously lost to them by over 30 points. We are looking to use the momentum of this meet for the Patriot League Championships in two weeks,” Hornock said.

The Orange and Blue will compete in their last meet before the Patriot League Championships at the Bucknell Winter Classic Saturday in Gerhard Fieldhouse.

Women’s basketball flounders at Navy

Ajan Caneda

Senior Writer

After staging two consecutive second half comebacks, the women’s basketball team couldn’t replicate the same performance against Navy, suffering a 61-40 defeat in Annapolis, Md. on Feb. 2. The Orange and Blue dropped to 13-9 overall, finishing the first half of Patriot League play with a 4-3 conference record.

Turnovers hindered the Bison in the first half as they gave up the ball six times in the first 10 minutes of play. The Orange and Blue did most of their scoring outside of the paint with all five of their three-pointers coming in the first half, including two from Katherine Harris ’15. Unfortunately, Navy kept pounding the ball inside, outscoring the Bison 22-10 in the paint. The score was 36-27 at the break.

“In both of our last two games we’ve dug ourselves a hole at the beginning that proved too hard to get out of. Both American and Navy pressured us and forced us into making more turnovers than we would like to at the beginning of the game,” Harris said.

Navy eventually regained a 10-point lead early in the second half, but the Bison were determined not to let the game slip away from them, as forwards Felicia Mgbada ’13 and Lindsay Horbatuck ’13 scored consecutive baskets to trim the lead to six. After a Navy three-pointer, the same duo scored two lay-ups to make it 41-37 with less than 10 minutes left in the game.

Mgbada scored the Bison’s final points on a lay-up, as Navy’s defense held the Orange and Blue scoreless in the last 7:27 of the game.

Horbatuck recorded her 13th career double-double and her 30th career double-digit rebounding game with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Audrey Dotson ’15 had nine points and six rebounds, while Shelby Romine ’14 finished with eight points and five rebounds. Harris and Mgbada scored six points each.

Points in the paint and points off turnovers stifled the Bison offense as they were outscored 32-20 and 16-4 in those categories, respectively.

“The good thing is that now we have a week to prepare ourselves for the second round of Patriot League play. Now that we have seen every team once, we know we need to focus on the little things and make sure we are coming out completely prepared to go up against what every team is going to throw at us,” Harris said.

The Orange and Blue will look to gain back some momentum, as they host Army tomorrow at 7 p.m.

The women’s swimming and diving team gave a strong performance on its Senior Day meet, decisively ousting Patriot League rival Lehigh 184-102.

The Orange and Blue hosted Lehigh on Jan. 26 for the second-to-last meet of their regular season. Six of the Bison women, Lisa Bolle ’13, Anna Griest ’13, Morgan Oxley ’13, Elizabeth Porcellio ’13, Kelly Purcell ’13 and Marisa Taddeo ’13, were recognized before the meet.

“Lehigh is a strong team and we handled the challenge well as a group. In addition, it was a great way to send out our senior class since this meet served as our senior recognition day,” head coach Dan Schinnerer said.

The honored seniors performed strongly, with Oxley and Porcellio both a part of the relay team, along with Emma Levendoski ’16 and Emily Wright ’14, that won the 200 medley. Levendoski also had two individual victories of her own in the 100 back and 200 back.

Lauren Perry ’15 posted three victories. She won the 100 free with teammates Wright and Kaitlyn Utkewicz ’14 following close behind her for a top three Orange and Blue finish, as well as the 200 free where she blew the field away by 3.96 seconds. She finished with a victory in the 100 fly, a race she swam only three times this season.

“I was pleased with how I swam this weekend and I am excited to see what the championship meets will bring,” Perry said. “I think the team needs to continue to stay focused and maintain a positive attitude going into the rest of the season.”

Other notable performances for the Bison included Emily Norton ’15 with victories in the 100 breast and 200 breast, as well as Kelly Pontecorvo ’14 taking first in the 1,000 free and second in the 500 free. For diving, Katie Hetherington ’15 won the three meter board, while Tara Boyle ’15 took the one meter board with a career best score of 251.18.

“As we close out our season and work towards out championship meets in February and March, we continue to focus on improving in the details of our swims and dives. With more rest and less intense practices, we expect our team to sharpen their skills and peak for the championships,” Schinnerer said.

The Bison will finish out their regular season this weekend by hosting several opposing teams for the Bison Invite starting Saturday at 10 a.m.
